try bolting the starter up with no shims, might work, if not there may be a defect with the new starter, yes its new but still there could be something wrong internally with it. Also if all is well with no shims or you end up replacing it, it might not hurt putting a grond wire from one of the starter bolts to the frame while your under there, alittle extra grounding protection doesnt hurt a thing. Good luck.

bendix may be binding and staying engaged do to the angle of alignment. keep working the shims or getting rid of them completely. High torque starters have a higher pitch by design usually.

I got to looking and the gear is to close to the flywheel. it looks like the starter motor needs to be moved back from the starter mounting plate. does any one kow if I can get any shims to do this

Car: Yes
Engine: Usually
Transmission: Sometimes
Axle/Gears: Behind me somewhere
If it's a Hitachi starter, there are shims available to move the starter motor back from the mounting block. I think this is it. http://store.summitracing.com/partde...art=CSI%2D100S Nippondenso starters don't need that.

I had a post about this a long time back...

I eventually just went ahead and bought another starter for $78 shipped (just like that one) cause I didn't trust the gear on my new SFI flexplate.
I had to shim the new starter also. I did it the same way worked great!

I took the starter to the local performance shop and they gave my the correct shim for it and it works like a charm. thank you all for your suggestions. I always send all my friends to this site for their questions. Ihave never found a site that can answer just about all autop tech questions.
