It's not that difficult. Take the cap off and mark the direction the rotor is pointing in. Then mark the position of the base relative to the car. When you reintall it, make sure that when it's all in, the marks still line up.

Well, if you were just reinstalling the distributor you'd make a mark on the distributor base and another one on the intake, and when you put the distributor back in you'd line them up.
That doesn't make much sense though since you're replacing the intake, so make a mark on the firewall or something to line the distributor base up with.
Regardless of how you do it, the timing will have to be set when it's all done. The marks will get you close though.

Thats all correct, but if you miss the mark all you have to do is get the #1 piston to T.D.C.(top dead center) on the compression stroke check where the rotor is pointed in with the distrbutor cap off and then run your wires in the correct firing order.

Re: intake maifold
I taped down my rotor onto the base, as tight as i could, before pulling the dist. Next i made a mark, on the tip of the rotor, and one on the base. This way if there is any slack in the tape, and the rotor turns a couple fractions of an inch, its still marked.(so now the rotor is lined up with the base.)
Now put some tape aound the shaft of the distribuor and make a mark. If you arent removing the intake, make a mark on it, if you are, make a mark on the firewall.
Now you have the base of the distributor lined up to the engine.
Pull out the distributor, the rotor will not turn, because you taped it down, you will need to turn the distributor as you pull up. Look at the gears, you'll understand why.
Putting it back in, you cant slide it straight in, because of the gears. SO put it roughly where you think it should go. When its COMPLETELY SEATED, check all your marks, they should all line up. If not, youre probably off by a tooth, pull out and repeat until you get it.
the gear teeth are big enough, that if you are off by a tooth, its very obvious, you can really tell that it isnt lining up.
