should i cam it?
should i cam it?
well i just riiped off the complete exhaust on my 89 iroc 5.0tpi. figured since i have the exhaust manifolds off and i am pulling the intake to correct a coolant leak, i figure might as well pull the heads and port the whole top end. so since i am rite there do u guys think i should cam it? if so which cam do u guys reccomend with the stock heads? it has mass air which splits to two air filters. i have a new set of headers to throw on along with a cat back system..also wat has to be done to connect the y pipe from the headers to the cat back cause my cat is fried....should i just weld a pipe in between or does summit make an extension for this? thank in advance............

just put in a straight pipe where the cat was if you don't have emissions.
yes, i'd put in a cam. and a new timing chain. what exactly do you want out of the car? i've found the lt1 cam works pretty decently in the fuel injected applications with the 305. this will require some tuning on your part, but not much. with a converter (2400ish stall) and some decent gears (3.42's or 3.73's and posi) and tracion, the car would probably run in the 13.7 range. possibly even faster if you take some weight out of the car...can you tell i like drag racing?

yes, you might as well pull it all out and spend 50 bucks on bearings and a oil pump
oh yeah 20 for rings and have it fresh.
your bottom end will get jealous of all the goodies the top end recieved.
Its like sitting around the tree at christmas and your brother gets a new bike and you get a new supply of underware

lol, yeah, if you have a way to pull the motor out of the car and dissassemble, it wouldn't be a bad idea to freshen it up...but the second you find it needs to be bored over to get rid of the wall that is at the top of the cylinders (found on high mileage motors and ones that were not taken care of), just ditch the block and grab a 350. the 305 is really not worth rebuilding unless your retarded like me and "want a really fast 305" or "want something different"

no, the lt1 has a reverse flow cooling system and will not work with the tpi setup. also, the ignition system on an lt1 is different.

There is no reason not too.
Cam it.
*edit*
If you are stuck and have no clue which cam to choose, call compcams and tell them what kinda stuff you have in your engine, and they will tell you what will work with what you have. That doesnt mean you have to buy the cam that they suggested, you could allways go with a similar cam by a different manufacturer if you dont like compcams. I got the xe262h, but I have a mild 350, biggest cam I can throw at my stock heads. Youre more than likely going to have to burn a custom chip for your computer if you cam it, otherwise your computer will be like WHOA WHOA WHATS GOING ON IN HERE WHOA. I have never dealt with upgrading a tpi system so im just speaking out of my *** at the moment. But yeah, definently throw in a new cam, you will enjoy the difference.
