my 88s confusing me

hey guys, ive had a starting problem for over a year now and it hasnt gotten any better. basically it all started out with my car taking 2 cranks to start. each crank going for about 6 seconds each and with me pumping the gas. so i took it in awhile back and it turns out there was an oil sensor/switch that figured out when the pressure was right and then let the car start. the guys at the shop bypassed it and it started up perfect...two days later i went to go to a friends house. turned the key....nothing.aparrently bypassing the switch made the fuel pump run all night and all the next day. so now they put the switch back on and im back to square one..so im wondering if anybodys ever had this problem and/or have a solution..cause my next step is replacing the oil pump.

Find a new shop and replace the fuel pump relay.

replace the switch they bupassed, if that solved the problem before, you should replace it and it should solve the problem again.

No, don't replace the oil pressure switch. It's not the problem.

The fuel pump is powered through the fuel pump relay, controlled by the ECM. When the key is first turned on before the car starts, the ECM primes the fuel pump for a few seconds to pressurize the system before turning it off again. Then, when cranking starts, the ECM turns the fuel pump back on when it sees reference pulses from the distributor. It will keep the fuel pump on as long as the engine continues to run and it continues to see reference pulses.

The oil pressure switch is a backup to keep the fuel pump powered in case the relay fails.

This is pretty simple stuff that a shop should be able to diagnose without just bypassing this and that until it works.

Can you hear the fuel pump prime when you first turn on the key without starting the engine?

umm i went to go replace the fuel pump relay and when i took out the old one i notice that uhh the second orange wire from the left was missing...im assuming thats bad.and i was looking through a book and couldnt figure out where that wire went..it either goes to the fuel pump primer or the oil pressure switch. i think it goes to the oil pressure switch but im not sure

I had this problem not as bad though. I would turn the key and it would crank and crank then come on. I finally realised that I'm trying to turn the engine over with no gas at the TB. All I did was turn my key forward so all the ignition electronics were hot. Wait a few seconds for the pump to get some gas up to my TB and BAM starts the second I turn the key. May not be your problem but stupid **** like that can cost you $200 when you send it to the mechanic to check out.
