thread loc/ loc tite

what all should be threadlocked on a motr?

i think its red stuff for tranny ... (all i know is my brother used non, and broke a tranny in half.)

... and blue for things like accsesory and intake????

what about inside the engine?

This should be a reminder to all the new wrenchers out there.... use loc tite

Re: thread loc/ loc tite

Intake bolts go into the water passages, so they need a thread sealer. Ditto for head bolts. Internal engine bolts need lubrication to get accurate torque readings. None of the bolts anywhere on the car "need" a locker.

Your brother's broken transmission was in no way a result of using any thread locker.

A properly torqued bolt doesn't loosen from vibration.

Re: thread loc/ loc tite

Teflon tape is for sealing tapered pipe threads.

Best thing I've ever found for that is a WRENCH. Closely followed by a ratchet & socket.

Re: thread loc/ loc tite

Threadlock is recommended on torque converter bolts, and is required on some transmission bolts, like T56 shift housing to main housing bolts, 4L60E adapter bell bolts, and probably others I don't know about. You can usually spot those requiring threadlocker by the residue on the threads of the bolts as they are removed.

What the Metal Monkey was suggesting for head and intake bolts is a liquid thread sealant, not tape. Try something like this:

Re: thread loc/ loc tite

My torque converter bolts flew out, right into the starter. All three bolts had loctite on them originally, however it looks like maybe the one flying out didn't have quite enough.

So for some things, yes, use a tiny bit of loctite.

As for me, I'm just going to use a tiny tiny bit.

I'm waiting for the day when someone will use high temp loctite on valve covers and rocker arms
