Engine misses at 40MPH

I bought an 86 about 2 weeks ago and it is missing but only missing between 35 and 40 MPH. I am not sure where to even start there are a lot of things it could be from what I hear. I tried a fuel cleaner and it didn't help. I was thinking the next couple of things I might try are a new fuel filter and new plugs and wires. Also when I bought the car the air pump has the belt off of it and I was thnking maybe that has something to do with it? MAybe something with the timing? Please help

Re: Engine misses at 40MPH

are you sure it isn't the torque converter locking and unlocking? factory programming has that happen around 35-40 mph.

I am not sure. It is REALLY jerky right around there like moving me forward and backwards in my seat.

Re: Engine misses at 40MPH

I guess it could be possible that it is the TCC solenoid. Or even the clutch itself. We replace em in the yodas all the time. I wouldnt rule out anything. MAF car?

Re: Engine misses at 40MPH

disconnect the electrical connector at the transmission and take it for a test drive to see if it still does it. if it doesn't, you have found the problem. then reconnect the connector.

off subject, i kinda miss norfolk. i was stationed there in the early '90s.

Re: Engine misses at 40MPH

I can disconnect that and still drive? I am still sort of new to fixing cars and everything I know so far I have taught myself. So a lot of this stuff I am not exactly sure what you guys are talking about. I have an idea but am not sure.

Yeah it is nice having everything near by. What ship or squadron were you with?

Re: Engine misses at 40MPH

lol....when i was your age i did good to do a tune up and change oil and brakes.
yes you can drive it for short distances like that. just don't do it for long or at highway speeds. i have mine programmed so that the convertor doesn't even lock until 44mph. the electrical connector is the only electrical connector on the transmission. it is on the drivers side. you just need to jack up the car to get to it. make sure you secure it before you test drive.

i was stationed on the U.S.S. Mount Whitney. was at pier 20 for the longest time then we got moved down to pier 5 at ***. i still have friends in the area that i haven't seen in forever. it sucks to be broke

Re: Engine misses at 40MPH

I think I will definatly try that. could it have anything to do with the timing?

I am with VAW 123 we just got back from a six month cruise and this car was sort of my present to myself lol. I only paid 1000 for it.
