91 RS smokes all the time

I just bought this 91 RS a month ago, I know it has been sitting for 3 or 4 months before I bought it, but other than that it don't over heat. The coolant level is fine. Could it be the EGR valve, smog pump, or the catalytic coverter? Or a combonation of all 3 maybe? I know I had to bolt the tube back on that goes to the back of the smog pump. So if anyone can help me out here......I'm all ears. Also thanks in advance for any help.

Re: 91 RS smokes all the time

could be many things , i would recommend a press. check of all cylinders . then a comparison of all . could be rings , valves , not sure , don't think e.g.r. . pull all plugs , press. each cylinder ( 80 p.s.i. ) , listen to intake , listen to exhaust , listen to oil filler cap area ( cap removed ) . intake lk. , intake valve , exhaust lk. , exhaust valve , oil filler area , rings . most common of smoke problems is valve stem seals . take one step at a time , do not panic . there is no such thing as a perfect/total seal . keeping on with your search and questions can only help . good luck ...

Re: 91 RS smokes all the time

what color is the smoke? Blueish smoke is oil burning, black = running too rich, white sweet smelling smoke - coolant. As tom mentioned valve stem seals are a common source of oil burning on startup, but if its happening all the time it most likely isn't valve seals.

It's most definetly white smoke, in a way it smells sweet. My coolant level is fine, it doesn't overheat, there is no coolant in my oil. So why would it be coolant?????? Could you please explain......

Mine does the same thing to. It blows white smoke but no coolant in the oil, does not overheat, and coolent level is fine.

Re: 91 RS smokes all the time

first is it steam or smoke? i like to take a small window pane or mirror and hold it in the "smoke" if it fogs or gets some condensation you know it is coolant if it doesnt get condensation or the exhaust doesnt feel wet then it is smoke

I did the mirror thing and it did get alittle condensation on it but not much, so it is most defently coolant? So I have a small crack in one of the water jacket holes in the head gaskets then?
