Starter Removal
Is it possible to remove your starter without dropping the y-pipe? I've got the starter unbolted and disconnected but the solenoid keep getting caught up.

The clamps on the manifolds are so rusted and fused together trying to unbolt them is going to shear off the studs.

Re: Starter Removal
Oh man, your not alone in that one. My solenoid kept getting caught up as well, just take it off, thats what i did. Should only be 2 small bolts, 8M is the size your going to need, and then there is a longer screw/bolt thats connected to the copper piece that comes out of the starter, with a little grunt work and 5 minutes you should be able to get it out, i did from a 1984 z28 with a 350 dropped in. good luck and tell me how it goes
btw: once you have the bolts out of the solenoid, twist it clockwise and it should pop off, make sure you don't lose the spring (you'll see it)

Got it out. Thanks, I thought it was still going to bind on the lip of the starter but it came out almost with no problem. Don't know why I didn't think of that...

Re: Starter Removal
New Problem: There's no power to anything. How can I test to see if there's power going to the solenoid by myself?
Also, there were only 2 wires going to the main post on the solenoid and 1 ground wire, it seems to me that my other camaro had 3 wires going to the main post but I can't find anything else. I'm sure I only took 2 off the other one though too.
Any ideas?

Re: Starter Removal
hmm, on my starter i had 2 wires going to a post on the starter and 2 wires going to my solenoid. the two going to the solenoid were small, while the two on the starter were larger. i could tell you what was what but i'm not home right now. okay, make sure your battery is unpluged and make sure your wires arn't touching the exhaust manifold or down pipe. double check the hook ups as well. next real quick get some fuse removers and go through your fuse box, i had 3 blown fuses that i hadn't known about that i had gotten from a electrical surge (its just a precaution but its good to do it). now if you have had an electrical surge for some reason or anyone there are fuse links located on your main power wires i think, one of those may have blown.
other things, techincally, you should be getting power to your accessories no matter what condition your starter is in. so recheck all your connections first.
i have to go as well other wise i would help you more. once you get power, if you get power, and your car isn't starting do the following
turn your key on
turn your head lights on
have someone stand in front of them while you attempt to start the car, if your motor doesn't turn over at all and your lights go really dim, then your starter is most likely siezed, which means ya, you need a new one.

There is no ground wire going to the solenoid.
The solenoid has a terminal that attaches to the motor via a blade-type conductor. The large terminal on the solenoid should have the battery cable and the "chassis power" wire, often two wires in a single lug. The start signal wire goes to the small terminal on the solenoid closest to the enginer.

Re: Starter Removal
thanks five7kid, thats a better way of explaining it, i got mine on yesterday and it turns over now, but my battery is dead =(, oh well, i'll charge it later if the snow here lets up. anyway, i have two wires that got to the small terminal on solenoid, one is the start signal wirse for sure, the other actually branches off the larger wire, not the battery cable i'm fairly sure, but the chassis power wire, idk what for, but thats the way it was before so thats how i put it back together.
hows it going with your starter 87?
