Speedometer

Hello --

I must be some kind of an idiot. Here's why.. the needle on the speedometer on my 88 IROC 5.7 is not springing back. The spring is obviously shot.. so, when I take off.. going whatever slow speed.. the needle goes where-ever it wants. Just bounces around like crazy. I got another speedometer on ebay.. that does spring back into place properly. I CANNOT figure out how to get the original speedometer out.

I took the plastic cluster cover off.. then the plexiglass.. then the metal cover off of the actually guages. I see screws around the voltmeter, gas guage, temperature guage.. but, not around the speedo. Please tell me how to get it out and put the working one in.

Thanks

j

Re: Speedometer

did you remove the spedo cable on the back of the cluster? You have to do this from under the dash.

Re: Speedometer

thanks for the replies guys.. I see the pics.. great. So, I have to pull the entire white housing out with the guages. Do I need to undo the speedo clip before I pull the housing? Or can I get to it as I'm pulling it out. It appears I have to access it from underneath.

Maybe a better question.. this speedo appears as though it would work.. just need to get that spring to tense up again.. anyway to just replace that?

thanks

Yes, you must pull the entire housing. Yes, you need to undo the clip beforehand. Access it from underneath. Sounds like the speedo head has expired.
