91 Z28 wont start
Im having issues with my 91" Camaro. When I turn the key to start up, the gauges look like its going to turn over and the turns on. (and e brake light turns on) But the starter won't start. I took out the starter thinking it would solve the problem. But after having it check i was told it was still good. Same thing with the battery. I drive it everyday. I sometimes have problems with my turn signal, (when i use it the car honks). steering wheel has play (i know the gearbox). Im sure its in the steering column somewhere in there but im not too familiar with it. What would need changing? how do i take everything out?

Re: 91 Z28 wont start
my next test would be the ignition switch.
Turn on ignition and bridge the starter.
You get rotation then it's a wiring or switch problem.
Use a DMM and test wires before ripping it apart.

does it get power? maybe mice gnawed thru a wire?
the turn signal + honk sounds like a electrical circuits crossing. might have something to do with your steering loose.

Put your battery and starter back in and have someone turn the switch while you hold a test light on the small wire going to the starter solenoid. With the switch turned on the wire should be hot. As for as the steering column goes you will need a steering wheel puller and a lock plate remover to get to the guts. you may need to replace the turn signal switch. The looseness is caused by four bolts under the switch that hold the tilt mechanism have backed out. I recommend you buy a shop Manuel.

WIRING in the steering column..I would not say take everything out..Unless you KNOW it to the bone..You might have to pay out the butt for someone to do it though..I have had TWO steering wheels replaced..because the alarms systems were added...Three different ones..When I bought mine,it had a push button start..a by pass...WIRES are a B

Re: 91 Z28 wont start
I had that problem on the honking when I would turn but on my 93Z .. I just pulled the fuse to the horn !
but your starter is not related to that. it could be the relay .. but if you check with the test light like someone said that will tell you if its good or not.
2nd.. ignition with the vats problem .. find the ohm resistance on your key and by pass the vats for a test start. If it starts fine then you have problem with your ignition reading the vats.

Re: 91 Z28 wont start
Hello,
I have a similar problem, as the original post. However it is a 92' RS, hasn't been started in 6 months, (Deployed) Started great before I left.
1. I have 13.2 volts at the battery/starter (new battery)
2. I turn the key on I get power, to the accessories.
3. Turn the key and nothing except the light click of a relay on the firewall, trying to track that down, right now.
4. Jump the starter, and it will spin no problem. Car will not start however.
5. Checked fuzes under the dash, unless I missed one under the hood.
6. Security light is OFF (Vats working?)
I have been trying to get it started for a few days now, and no luck, so I thought I would give the forum a try. I used to read it all the time, but forgot my login data, so reregistered. Thanks in advance

Re: 91 Z28 wont start
First, Thankyou for serving our country. Need to check for power at the small wire on the starter. There sould be power at the small post when switch is engaged.

Re: 91 Z28 wont start
I will check for power on that wire / terminal in the morning, and see what she has. Thanks
EDIT:
Well, I did some looking and discovered that my VATS was malfunctioning. So I went to Radio Shack, and got the resistors that I needed to bypass the VATS, and tada!
Starts like a dream...
Thanks for pointing me in the right direction. I am not sure if I should post the link on here as to the VATS data, but I have the link if the Mods, want it posted.
Thanks again

Re: 91 Z28 wont start
My firebird sometimes does the same thing and i have to carry a wrench to loosen the battery terminal wait 5 min and reconnect the battery and wait another 10 min and it starts back up im pretty sure its the vats system.
