Filling the tank

I may be in the wrong thread but here it goes. I bought an 83 Z cheap!!! Previous owner installed new tank(brand new!!). I am having trouble filling up the tank. Gas runs in for a few seconds then cuts off. Filler neck is full but gauge shows 1/4 tank. It is like it is not vented and needs to burp. Does anyone have any suggestions?? I have tried pouring fuel in with funnel and can very slow, same results.

Re: Filling the tank

I would replace the sending unit and then try with a known working gauge (not the one currently in) and if it's still reading 1/4, you know it's got to do with the tank.

If it reads differently, you know your sender or the gauge or both were bad.

Hope this helps.

Re: Filling the tank

I have not found a known working gauge. I have put in a new dash cluster and get the same reading from both gauge sets though.

Re: Filling the tank

Use a long metal rod (like 1/8") to stick in & see if the tank is actually full or not first.

I can't imagine dropping the tank to get the sending unit out, with a full 14 gallons of gas, at 8lbs per gallon.....Not exactly light!

If its pull, you can use a hose to siphon the tank into a jug first, before dropping the tank......Or just do the gas pump access door mod & be done much faster! You'll get lovers & haters on that mod.......The haters have never done it, the lovers can't imagine having another 3rd gen without it.

Re: Filling the tank

I have read a lot of posts both for and against "door" mods. If I ever did it (not saying I will) I would not tell a soul!!! Too many strong opinions on such matters.
