Oil dipstick question.

Is there supposed to be any kind of grommet or o-ring sealing the dip stick tube? Figuring there is,lol. I've had a bad leak for a few days and after looking around I found the valve cover had bolts backed loose. Tightened them down and plan on using some lock-tight on them this weekend, but either way only seems to have cured half the problem.
The motor is a fresh rebuild by a reputable builder so I doubt its the main seal. All the leaking is on the back half of the motor. Which comes back to what I ask at the beginning. What is used to seal the oil dipstick tube?
The motor is a 70s model 350

Re: Oil dipstick question.

hm..... really didn't expect that answer. Guess I'm gonna have to get a rag and clean the area since i've fixed the valve covers and search for it. Just bugs me since i'm going through about a quart of oil in 3 days. That and the oil I buy is like $7 a quart...
Thanks for the info

Re: Oil dipstick question.

If you're losing that much oil then it's probably a ventilation problem. I'd check PCV.

Maybe the rings have not sealed yet and you are getting blow by pressurising the crankcase. People have been know to blow the dipstick right out in some bad cases
As noted back sure your PCV sytem is operating correctly

Re: Oil dipstick question.

Check the oil pressure sending unit, on driver side right next to the distributor. Also check knock sensor on pass side of the block towards the back of motor.....

Re: Oil dipstick question.

hm....don't believe I have a knock sensor. Simple carb set up. Didn't think pcv could cause much leaking but i'll check that. Thanks for the input. I have push in breathers now. I may go ahead an install the little valves and hook it up to the carb
