Engine id number??

i bought my z28 82 camaro used about three weeks ago. its a car that needs some tlc, and because i cant drive it yet(only 15) thats about all i can do for it. its got a 350 tranny on it and a small block 350. the problem; i have the engine id, but i cant trace it to anything? the id number that i pulled is K0721Z5H. i've got some info on it that i dug up, but i was wondering if anybody could help me out with it. let me know if you need pictures or anything. thanks a lot.

Re: Engine id number??

I didn't return any hits from it. Try calling a GM dealer, they should be able to run it. What exactly are you wanting to know about it?

Your looking at the wrong stuff. Casting numbers dont start with letters.

Re: Engine id number??

If the motor is not original to the car the only way you can ID the block is to get the casting numbers off of it. They can be found along the back and front of the block.

Re: Engine id number??

Recheck those last 3 digits. They should all be letters and are usually hard to see what they exactly are.

An F could be a B, E etc. Since they are stamped in, they might not be perfectly clear.

K = St. Catherines, Ontario engine plant
0721 = July 21
Z5H = ???

Closest thing I could find remotely close to Z5H is ZRB which is a 1989 350. Does it have 5.0L or 5.7L in a castings? Is it perimeter or center bolt valve covers? What side is the dipstick on? Is it one or 2 piece rear main seal?

That can all help pinpoint a year range it might be from. All the casting number can do is give you a basic year range the block was used in and if it's a 4" bore block used on the 350 and other engines or if it's a smaller 305 bore block.

Re: Engine id number??

Here is the link to a long list of engines. The engine casting number that you need is located at the rear of the block, right where it meets flush with the tranny. Along the rim it should read "GM 5.7" or "GM 5.0" . Now opposite of the GM logo, you should see a group of 6 - 8 digit numbers. That is the Casting ID.

The 2 or 3 letter code stamped on the block pad truely identifies what car the engine originally came out of , Hp , trans ,etc.
The one basic block casting may have been used for many setups.
The famous "010" block everybody wants was in hi perf Vettes and 180Hp trucks

The casting id number for the block is on top and to the rear. It's not on the bottom.

Re: Engine id number??

If you're that concerned about it, pull the head off and measure the bore and stroke.

Re: Engine id number??

... Measure the diameter. If the measurement is 4 inches across, or 327. It's not that hard to get the casting off the top/back of the block. All you need is a flashlight, a dentist mirror (small mirror attached to a rod), and a bit of patience.
