where dies this plug in

There is a plug on the underside of my engine and I am not sure where it goes. I have not yet climbed under to look. It's a 5.0l tpi thinks. http://www.facebook.com/photo.php?pi...&id=1280743137

Pass side I assume?

On pass side there are two sensors, both look kinda the same and have the same plug on them.

1) Fan switch - in between #6 and #8 spark plugs in the head - this senses coolant temps and runs your electric fan accordingly

2) Knock Sensor - this is same location, except lower in the block instead of in the head, this senses engine knocking (pinging) and adjusts timing accordingly

Both these sensors have a mushroom-like end on them made of plastic.

Of course, your plug end is toast - they are plastic, get brittle from heat, and disinegrate. You can have any auto parts store order you a Dorman 85140 - it's the proper end plug to replace that broken one you have. It can be seen here:

http://www.dormanproducts.com/flipbo...nductTite.html

Top left corner of 'the book', you want to change page number to 32 - 4th row down, 1st connector - that is what you need.

If they can't find a Dorman part #85140, have them try Conduct-tite 85140.

Okay would a faulty knock cause the service engine soon light to come on and then go right back off after hitting a bump?

That sounds more like a faulty MAF, or possibly a loose electrical connection.
With the engine running tap on the outside of your MAF and see if the SES light comes on or the engine stumbles.

I only have basic knowledge of cars. Where is the maf? And I took some closer pictures of the plug http://www.facebook.com/album.php?ai...7&l=052f20b5a2
I also spent like 30 mins feeling around and looking around it and saw nothing that looks like it would go into or did go into

In your photo 6-of-13 it (the MAF) is in the middle of your intake air duct, between the throttle body and your air filter housing. It has a plastic body and a multi-wire connector attached to it.
Use the search function of this forum for more information.

A clue to your mystery wire is that it looks like it had a Viton weather-pack seal, - still attached to it. That might rule out the knock sensor or the fan switch.
A couple of other possibilities are EGR and AIR diverter. Without being there it's really hard to say. There are a few other possibilities.
What is the exact color coding on that wire?

Umm I would have to go back under the car and take off the plastic casing on the wire to get a good look. I'll check when I get a second

Re: where dies this plug in

So I just read up on the erg and that sounds like my problem. I had stalled out at a stop sign when I took it around the block the other day and it said the engine may shut off at cold temperatures with the erg malfunctioning. And seeing how its winter in Maine it was cold hahaha

Re: where dies this plug in

Quick update: it ended up being the MAF I found one for 75$ its running great now but its sitting in my drive way till I can come up with the 200$ to register it. I do have another problem. The ignition will turn over with no key in it, and it will start right up. Any idea why it does this? And how I can solve it? Wouldn't want someone to make off with the car when I have the t-tops off
