fouled plug

I just pulled my plugs today and all looked good accept for #2. It's fouled, just nor sure if it's fuel fouled or oil fouled???..I can't tell from the smell. I just had all my valve guides replaced 160 miles ago and if they are going again i'm going to puke!

Re: fouled plug

just wondering if it looks more like fuel or oil?????...one side of the plug looks like a dull black the other side has more of a rough shiny black????

Re: fouled plug

Oil deposits are white and chaulky. Very rich fuel mixture is black and sooty. This looks like unburned fuel deposits from no or weak ignition. Though it may just be running a bit rich. Was it wet when it came out? Have you noticed a misfire?

You run the superram TPI don't you? You could have a bad ignition wire or a bad injector. Verify compression on that hole.

When I had all my guides go bad last time I did have white deposits on the plugs. I havent seen that on this plug yet. As of now it looks like a dry black soot on one side of the insulator and a wet/more shiny black on the other half of the insulator. At idle the engine surges like 200 RPMs in park. I had a tune I was running for the past 150 miles that sounded like it was detonating over 4300 RPMs at WOT, engine is 11:1 with 93 octane. That tune had 34* total timing and was around 12.5-13.2 WOT, 14.5-15.2 driving normal. I now have a tune with 29* total timing with 5% more fuel added and I dont hear detionation at WOT anymore. Both tunes A/F mixtures look good while driving and WOT but the WB O2 gauge at idle moves between lean and alittle rich as the car surges at idle. I put the car on a smoke machine, showed no vacuum leaks..TPS,IAC,fuel pressure, all good. So far its just the one plug looking bad. I did a resistance test on all my wires and they are good. the ignition is stock bedides for an msd blaster coil..Maybe i need to step up to a 6AL? I also did an OHMS test on all my injectors, all 14 ohms cold and between 15-16 warm. I just checked compression on that cylinder with the other plugs still in...180psi. No blue or black smoke from the exaust yet. I'm really hoping its a fuel problem not the valve guides going bad due to the few pulls I made with detonation??? Geomerty is perfect I check a few times.

Re: fouled plug

if I'm lucky and it turns out to be fuel over oil whats the fix...I see this fouling on #2 as in the pictures a also did see and very little of the same on #1.. Could this be because those are the longest spark plug wires. At what point does someone need a 6AL box?

Re: fouled plug

That appears to be carbon,if it's just the one plug check the wire for corrosion or cracks, and the dist.cap at that wire make sure that doesn't have a crack in it.

Re: fouled plug

The MSD is a definite plus on any highly modified engine. I would say you certainly qualify.

Re: fouled plug

Looks like fuel to me to. If it fouled with oil, you would def know it. Burnt oil deposits can be white and chaulky. But unburn oil on a fouled plug is black and oilly. Especially down inside the plug.

If this is the only plug being goofy.
Check resistance on that plug wired compared to the others. Swap that plug with another. And or swap that wire with #1.

If its more than one plug, and you had a history of fouling before having the guides fixed, do this.

Then pull all the plugs and clean them well.
