white milky oil

i started my new engine for the first time. it only ran for like 1 min tops and i decided to check the oil and it was milky. is their any chance that it was from the assembly lube in the engine?

i had a engine shop build the engine and i noticed he used a white lube. it was on the cam gear that goes to to distributer.

i really hope it does not mean head or intake gasket leak.. everything is brand new. or maybe even a cracked head or block

and when i filled the oil for the first time it was up to the full line and it has actually gone down a little since i started it. so that makes me think its not antifreeze.

Re: white milky oil

Never seen any assembly lube turn oil milky - besides, there shouldn't be enough lube anywhere to 'milk' up 5 quarts of oil.

Re: white milky oil

There's also a possibility that water entered the engine somehow since it was built. Through a valve cover breather etc. Cheapest fix is to get the engine hot, change the oil and filter then monitor fluid levels for a while and see if the oil milks up again. Technically, you should fire up a rebuilt engine to break it in then change the oil and filter anyway. Change it again at 500 miles then on regular scheduled periods.

If the oil gets milky again, I'd suspect an intake manifold gasket leaking. It's unlikely a new head gasket got damaged to allow coolant to drain into the oil.

Re: white milky oil

for how long was the engine sitting without running after the rebuild? Did you have it covered in plastic?

My most recent rebuild sat for about 6 weeks uncovered without any milky substance. other rebuilds I fired right up.

Re: white milky oil

talked to the guy who built the motor and he said it could be grease from building it. the engine prob sat for 2 or 3 months, and it was covered in plastic the whole time. it was not heated and i live in pa. it was only warm in thier in the evenings when i was working in thier. maybe it got some condensation. i wont worry about it for now. i have many other problems haha.

Re: white milky oil

I have had some assembly lubes turn fresh oil cloudy, not milkshake like with a water leak just the oil is not clear. Also on one occasion I noticed the epoxy I used to glue in valley screens and magnets reacted with my break in oil turning it cloudy, changed oil and never had the problem again

Let some of your oil sit for a couple of days in a clear container, if there's water in it it should separate and sit on the bottom of the container

Re: white milky oil

I could see through mine too on the dipstick. Change the oil and check again, could very well be the assy lube.

Re: white milky oil

well it does not matter now. i have been having proplems getting a starter to mesh right and i saw some one say about their block being cracked on the bolt holes so i looked at mine. i have crackes across both of my starter bolt holes. so its being torn back apart. after draining the oil i think it was just that lube.
