Manifolds glowing red

I have a 91 camaro rs that I just put a 350 in. I drove it up the road about two miles just driving normal and got home looked under the hood and my manifolds are glowing red. Anybody know what the cause of this could be? Thanks

Could also be running very lean. Exhaust temp at WOT shouldn't get above 1300*. Glowing manifolds is a lot hotter than that.

Re: Manifolds glowing red

If your exhaust system isn't clogged, then you have a very late spark, or a late burning fuel.
Retarded timing will do this, and running race gas in a street engine will do this. Running too much of a fuel additive or running E85 will also do this.

Clogged exhaust should cause a power loss and you should hear a wheezing sound or rattle in the exhaust.

The other conditions would also cause a noticeable power loss.

Re: Manifolds glowing red

Details on the 350? Injected, carbed, did you re-use parts from a 305? I'd suspect air/fuel ratio if this didn't occur with the old engine, assuming it's the same exhaust and you didn't drain/replace the fuel in the tank.
