Won't start/ crank over

Ok I drive the car home last night from work fine no problems at all. This moring I went to drive my car and it didn't start or crank. So I though it was a bad battery or died battery so I got it check and the battery is fine. I tired another battery I had I'm my other car and no start either. So it's not the battery. Could it be the starter ? I didn't have time to check it and I don't really want to take it out because I have custom exhaust and trans cooling lines that are in the way so it's going to be a pain in the *** to take it off. Is there any way to test the starter without removing it ? Any info would be helpful

Oh and when I turn the key I only hear a clicking sound coming from the driver side close to the winsheild, the electrical connections close to the harness that goes through the fire wall

Re: Won't start/ crank over

I'm having the same issue with my 85 Z28. I'm going to try to jump the starter with a wire to the battery. Seems like it might be a tranny gear selector switch or ignition switch proble. I might install a push button start if problem persists.

Re: Won't start/ crank over

Yea I was able to take out the starter and get it check it works fine. I also changed the ignition switch and not doesn't start. I checked the fuse and nothing at least the ones under the driver side dash. I'm so confused. I'm just going to take it to a car electrical specialist on tuesday. I'm just lost

Re: Won't start/ crank over

I ran a jumper to the starter and the engine started (using starter spray) but still won't run by itself. I installed a new fuel pump (what a pain). I gues the next step is the fuel pump relay. Anybody want to tell me where it is on a 1985??

Re: Won't start/ crank over

For everyone having this problem, be sure to check your ground straps. You should have one from the neg battery to the chassis, from the chassis to the block, from the block to the firewall. If you're block is not properly ground, the starter will not complete it's circuit and will not function.

This is a very common problem with a no start and, a good starter and battery.
Good luck guys.

It seems so obvious! I'll check all grounds tomorrow. Thanks, sometimes the simplest items are the reasons we all overlook.

No problem. I've had that issue once before, spent money on a battery, starter, ignition switch, neutral safety switch and, it turned out to be a 7 dollar ground cable.

Re: Won't start/ crank over

i notice the security light is on now all the time when before the light used to turn off after a few seconds of the ignition being turn on.
could it be that my vast system is not working and not allowing the car to turn on ?

Re: Won't start/ crank over

One goes From the negative terminal on the battery down the the frame on the passenger side. ( it should be right in between the Engine and the fender well)

One on the firewall to the back of the engine block. This one should be just behind the carb on the passenger side and leads down to the engine block where, the original exhaust tube hanger bolts to the block. ( this one can be relocated to another point on the block but, will still need to be grounded to the firewall)

I added one that goes from the front passenger side of engine block over to the frame rail where, the first ground connects. There is usually a unused bolt hole in the front of the block near the water pump towards the passenger side. That is going to be the one you really want to focus on. If the block isn't grounded, the starter will do nothing. Use decent gauge wire. Cheap at any auto part store. 8 bucks for 48" strap with eye hooks on each end.

Re: Won't start/ crank over

Ok I took the car to the shop and it was the vast system that was not working. They changed the ignition cylinder and it started right up but I still have the draw and the lights dimming
