starter issue

Hi everyone
need a little help with starter issues. I recently picked up an 85 iroc that had been sitting for years, drained all gas and fluids. refilled fluids with all new, new wires, plugs, cap and rotor. car still will not start(thinking I need to rebuild carb). My issue now is turned key starter engaged and ran really fast, turned key off tried again and now starter turns over slowly once moans and groans then turns over again really slowly. figuring that starter is burnt out.

Any advice would be appreciated
Thanks
Mike

Re: starter issue

Start sounds like it's going. Change it at autozone for like $75 with the warranty because they fail a lot.

Also, the car will need a going through, probably new needles. Clean it out with carb cleaner and q-tips. And i mean clean, dont just spray it on thinking it'll fix it. Take it apart and spray then wipe with q-tips. Good luck!

Thanks Krazy. I've already tried cleaning carb out with cleaner and q tips.

Sound like battery is going flat
Is the battery fully charged (now )?

Check batt terminals, cables and grounds too.

I know battery is weak but I have been trying to star it with a boost, would that matter. meter shows cables running 12v to starter

If you have a decent sized roll around charger let it sit for 5 min on boost then crank it. If you have those small ones it'll need a good charge. If the problem still keeps happening with the starter chances are it needs a new one. They are in a bad location the exhaust heats them up and causes then to fail fast. Shouldn't take any longer than 20 min to change with the proper tools. Good luck!

Re: starter issue

I've found jumping to be a pretty hit/miss affair. If the jumper clamp connectors aren't up to the task they will never carry the required start current. If the battery has lost capacity, you can charge it forever and still not get a decent crank.

If the charger/booster/other vehicle don't get it, I'd opt for a different batt (hopefully you can borrow a good one) before I went changing starters - it's the lesser pita.
