86 iroc tpi idle

hi,

I have a 86 iroc z, that idles high. i was getting codes 22 and 44. So I replaced the tps, now it tries to idle at 650-700 but is very tough and it either tries to die or kicks the idle back up to around 1500. my only guess now it's that it's either the IAC, EGR, or oil pressure sensor. am I barking up the right tree or way off? any imput is greatly appreciated.

Thanks, cyrus

I had a problem similiar to this and it ended up being a vacuum leak with worn out O rings. I had thought it was the IAC and I think I replaced it which actually helped a little but would still idle up to about 1500 and then drop back to about 700. I replaced the O rings and it was back to normal. You'll probably get better answers from the guys on this site, but it may be worth a shot to spray carb cleaner to find a vacuum leak.

I should've mentioned it is fuel injected with the tpi, unless you knew that. Anyway where to you spray the carb cleaner to find your leak? The way it idles so rough makes me think its choking itself out. But I don't really have much experience with these camaros, so I'm somewhat clueless.

Where ever you spray, if the engine revs up then the vacuum leak will be in that area. I sprayed carb cleaner on all of the intake and it revved up when I sprayed under the plenum. I ended up spraying directly onto the injectors and when I sprayed, the RPM raised significantly. So I popped off the upper intake plenum, pulled out the injectors, and replaced the O rings and it idled perfectly after that.

Re: 86 iroc tpi idle

yeah i have that link bookmarked, I tried the the carb cleaner, and it did exactly what you said happened to you. so I think I might try the O-rings on the injectors.

Hopefully that'll fix it. If not, replacing O rings is quick and cheap. Let us know what happens.

Re: 86 iroc tpi idle

Well, I pulled the fuel rails and everything else off today, the o-rings are horrid. But what is the most ugly part about it is all 8 injectors are falling apart. I'm guessing this might be my problem, but I wont know for a week or two. I guess the autopart stores around here dont keep 8 injectors in stock, so i'll be waiting for them to arrive.
