Camaro Bogs down when giving gas...

This is a on and off again problem daily. Car is 1990 IROC 305 TPI. I can be driving then give it gas and the car bogs down, does not want to go faster. Then a moment later I can give it gas, and the ***** will take off!!!! Bad fuel filter, fuel pump going out?

Re: Camaro Bogs down when giving gas...

I'm changing the fuel filter on mine this evening. I thought I was going to be on the side of the road this morning on the way to work. Stopped and filled it up (was on 1/4 tank) and it isn't nearly as bad. Mine gets worse on longer trips. I just bought it 2 weeks ago, after it had been sitting for a little over 2 years.

Re: Camaro Bogs down when giving gas...

The gas tank may have debris (rust particles, dust, etc) in it if the car had been sitting for some time. Had this same issue on my 86 fb a couple decades ago. I had to drop the tank to clean it out. The tanks are still metal on these cars as opposed to the composite tanks on newer cars.

Change the fuel filter first Then search the boards for "Vapor Lock" issues. In short, if your engine bay is too hot the gas is evaporating in the fuel line before it gets to the engine (carb/tpi/tb).

If you have corrected these issues the next step is to drop the tank as I said I needed to earlier, and clean it out cause there is **** getting caught in the tank pickup.

EDIT: I stand corrected. Its been a decade and half since I last owned a TPI fbody so there is still some foggy-ness regarding issue resolution. And I never had this issue on my LS1.

sofakingdom: FI cars NEVER EVER have that, because the fuel is under 40-ish psi of pressure in all the lines; as opposed to SUCTION, like "old school" carbed cars with block-mounted fuel pumps would have.
See this thread for Vapor Lock - https://www.thirdgen.org/forums/tech...apor-lock.html

Re: Camaro Bogs down when giving gas...

Ok. So I replaced my fuel filter today. What came out of the fuel filter was what I would call ideal! Rusty water and some gas. 25 minute drive home from my father-in-law's house, and the car ran perfectly. I had a sneaking suspicion that's what I would find, so I bought the cheapest filter, knowing I was going to change it a few times before I get it straightened out. Obviously, I may still wind up having to drop the tank, but I feel I've eliminated the pump as MY culprit. On that note, 806camaro, I'd suggest changing YOUR filter also. It's cheap, it's easy, and I can't find a negative thing about it. Good luck!

I had the exact same problem in my 87 350 Iroc, changed the fuel filter about a week ago and it hasn't given me a problem since. The fuel pump was also making a loud whining noise before and that has quited down as well.

Re: Camaro Bogs down when giving gas...

After about 3 days, mine started doing it again. Yesterday, I took it to a buddy's house that has a lift. I pulled the tank and cleaned it out. It was SUPER RUSTY. The car sat for over 2 years before I bought it. I went ahead and replaced the fuel pump while I was there. The newly replaced filter was packed with rust, so it obviously got changed too.

Dont just replace the pump and not do anything to the tank. I'd suggest replacing the tank. Its the best 200 you can spend. I got my car after siting for years and went through 4 pumps before changing the tank. Since the tank no problems. Its insurance because fuel controls everything.

I cleaned the inside of the tank. You would be amazed at what swing chain will do to the inside of a tank.

I bought a wix fuel filter, but have yet to change it. Just came back on. 1200 mile trip, the car runs awesome, get about 25mpgs. But still have a strong smell of fuel.

Re: Camaro Bogs down when giving gas...

I found my problem to be a bad throttle position sensor. Runs beautifully now. But it would be pretty obvious if you have a CEL and pull codes. I changed fuel pump filter and all. Clean filters then changed tps and now she purrs.

Re: Camaro Bogs down when giving gas...

I am having this same issue but with my 84 Camaro Carb when I give it gas in 1st gear it hesitates and slowly move until I engage the clutch and give it more gas, and then it finally starts moving like I change the fuel pump and I don't think that car has a fuel filter inside the gas tank? , I do have a fuel filter that goes to fuel inlet that goes to the carb but it looks to be clean.

Car: Yes
Engine: Usually
Transmission: Sometimes
Axle/Gears: Behind me somewhere
Re: Camaro Bogs down when giving gas...

Yes there is a fuel filter inside the tank. It's a little "sock" kind of thing on the end of the pickup tube.

Don't worry what the filter in the carb inlet "looks". Replace it. Make sure you put it in the right way: the spring goes into the carb first, then the filter with the metal end against the spring and the rubber end facing out. It's like MAYBE $5. Hanging on a card at the parts store, where the PCV valves, vacuum fittings, etc. also are.
