350 TPI .020 over NEED CAM!

K, i have read alot and im am beyond retarded when it comes to motors / mechanics and the likes. I have a guy building my 350 and asked what cam i would like in it. I was like hell if I know!!! so im asking all you smart 3rd gen motor peeps what i should do. its mainly a stocker, i want to just drive this car around. it wont see a race track, but i like to stab it off the line. it has a t5 5 speed and a posi rear that will be getting new gears. (its way too high, the car was auto) its a 89 trans am tuned port motor. anyway, he was throwing numbers at me like 252??? and no higher than 260 ??? for the cam. i have no idea what he is talking about. this computer also has a hypertech chip in it if that even matters.

what i want:
what cam should i buy??? (the specs)

oh you guys ROCK!!! its so nice to be connected to people who have specialty skills. OK, so the rear end i am going to re-gear, im thinking somewhere in the 3:50's to the 3:80's range. i have the BW 9bolt gta axle. as far as the engine, it was machined to .020 over bore, new pistons crank job, heads redone, valve job springs rockers ect. it is all done just stock tho. nothing fancy has been done. so im guessing just a stock cam is what i would do. i was just figuring since i have to buy one, may as well get the best for the app. oh headers i need them too, and intake is stock tunned port injection with all the stock stuff there, intake and all. compression im not sure on. I could ask the engine guy.

thanks so much again!!!! i really do appreciate the help and knowledge!!

Ken

alright, talked to engine guy hehehe he says its going to be around 8.5 to 8.75

All the major cam companies have forms you can fill out on their websites and they will recommend a cam based on that.

You need more compression, tpi motors came with over 9:1, dropping it from stock will only drop power and effeciency, unless you plan on adding a blower or turbo!

he just talked to me again, he thinks the cpression is going to be close to 10. we got this as a basket case, been rebuilt but put together shitty. he is thinking they may have even bumped the compression up as the pistons are "flat top" what ever that means. he was saying staying close to stock would be my best bet.

Look at my build thread as my 350 build sounds similar to what you're doing.

No! Don't do that! If you're going through a rebuild and are going with 3.70 gears and a T5, get a cam that's a little sportier.

With TPI you don't want to get into a high RPM cam, so the Comp 08-500-8 recommended above will be very good. It's similar in duration to a stock cam but with more lift. I would even go with the 08-501-8, it will run even better, sound better and still be very tame with your setup.
