My Camaro Won't Shift Into Park

Hi. My names Jake. I have a 1983 Camaro Z-28 with a stock 305 ci with Cross Fire Injection and a 4 speed automatic transmission. It won't shift into park. All the other gears work just fine. It goes all the way up. but it won't lock into park. It normally didn't go into park unless you let it kick into reverse for a few seconds. Now it won't go in at all. My emergency brake don't work other-wise I would use it. I could really use some help on this guys. Thanks for looking!! https://www.thirdgen.org/forums/images/smilies/help.gif

Have you checked your Park Lock cable that is connected to your shifter? See if there is any slack or if it has came off. If it's not the cable your most likely going to have to pull the trans pan and make sure the awl is engaging.

I would check the ends of the shifter cable (both ends) and make sure the plastic wings on the cable housing are not broken. Mine did that and the wings were broken off at the shifter where the cable housing goes thru the bracket just forward of the shifter. It allowed the cable to push forward while moving the lever to park. The cable housing should not move AT ALL.

Re: My Camaro Won't Shift Into Park

Does the shifter physically not go into the "park" location or is the gear not changing into "park"?

Re: My Camaro Won't Shift Into Park

I've gone through 2 shifter cables in the past year due to snapping, This happened after car started getting harder & harder to put in park, In my situation, there is a rubber grommet that I didn't have pushed in all the way at the opening where the cable goes though hole under car from under center console radio area (cuz it was a pain) & I think that's where I went wrong.

Okay it could be possible that I didn't get the rubber all the way in when I installed the shift cable. Thanks for the reply.

Re: My Camaro Won't Shift Into Park

Try putting the car into Park while jiggling the ignition key...I'm betting it's not adjusted properly, and you're running into the shifter locking mechanism that normally prevents the car from being taken out of Park without the key.
