91 Camaro won't crank?

Hey guys I am new to this thread. I need help figuring out about my 91 camaro RS no sudden crank. I bought a new battery, replaced terminals and new fuses. But the problem is, whenever I tried to start the car nothing happens. The fuel pump is suppose to prime and the starter should make a clicking noise. But neither of these works? Although my headlights would work, needles in my cluster gauge would tend to move clockwise whenever I start the car. My cluster gauge wouldn't light up at night, except for INFL rest which the only thing that blinks in cluster.

Re: 91 Camaro won't crank?

I would check connections at the starter solenoid. then I would check to make sure your getting power out of your ignition switch as well.

Re: 91 Camaro won't crank?

Sounds like a vats issue if you measure the resistance of the key And unplug the vats plug at the bottom of column the wires have a orange cover see if the resistance is there

Okay, how do I check for resistance? I am not good at these things. Where can I locate the orange wires? thanks for fast reply

If the pump is not priming then you have power supply problems ; VATS only effects starter operation
Check the Ign switch operation

https://www.thirdgen.org/forums/post...71-post19.html

You might want to pull the codes and see if a VATS fault is showing

Re: 91 Camaro won't crank?

Okay, i got the car cranking by using a screwdriver to contact the starter. Could it be the fuel pump is bad? I still don't hear it prime. Now does this have to do with the vats still? But i figured the ignition switch is bad.

If the switch is bad you potentially have no power to the pump , coil or starter
Will never start off the key

you will only know if you have a VATS problem after you get the Ign switch working

Re: 91 Camaro won't crank?

Okay, I have replaced the ignition switch but still nothing happens?.. I've measured the resistance of the plug with orange wire while key is on lock. As I turned the key forward to acc position the reading stayed the same, key code #10 3.74 which means my ignition cylinder is still good?

The car is 5 speed btw.

Re: 91 Camaro won't crank?

Try replacing the ignition switch, ignition lock cylinder and new distributor with cap, distributor module and distributor coil and see if that will solve the problem.

Throw parts at it until you find the problem ; a excellent way of wasting $$$

Perhaps he would not be wasting money if he has not replaced those parts.
From viewing his video it seems that the no start problem he is having is ignition related...

Re: 91 Camaro won't crank?

try sticking a resistor that matches the value of your key into the connector, with the column end still unplugged, then try starting the car, the video shows exactly what my car does when it has a vats issue, your problem could be in the wiring between that connector and the vats module

Sorry Cam_RS I should have read your early posts. My Bad. You did replace ignition switch and your ignition lock cylinder seems to be OK. I had exactly your problem seen in your video and it has all related to ignition. But I don't have VATS. I own an 86 carb 305 V8 and no VATS on those 86's.

Hope you get your car working...

The engine is not even cranking over so he hasn't got a far as a ignition ( spark ) problem yet

If he tests the starter circuit from one end to the other as I have suggested in several of his posts he should be able to identify
where he is loosing power to the starter solenoid

I'm not good at electrical problems, a visual image of where to test the starter circuit would be nice

No can do
You have to learn to read circuit diagrams like the one I gave you here

https://www.thirdgen.org/forums/post...34-post61.html

You test for power on the yellow wire out of the Ign switch and in and out at the enable relay and the clutch switch

Update, I've bypass the vats using a resistor in two white wires but the car still won't crank? The fan works and I've tried testing for power out of the Ign switch (yellow thick wire?) enable relay (green and yellow thick wire?) and cIlutch switch which is the gray or green wire? ground to the car. I don't know if I did the test for power the right way

Re: 91 Camaro won't crank?

Update, I got the car cranking by jumper wire from starter enable relay to clutch switch (purple) connector wire.

I've done the resistor trick thing, but the car wouldn't crank still. I have the right resistor reading 3.73 compare to my keys value 3.74
this is how i did mine.
http://i1048.photobucket.com/albums/...ps46e5e5c7.jpg

Besides not cranking, I can only hear the fan spinning and it would tend to slow everytime i turn the key to start position, long as I could hear a clicking noise on the starter enable relay when trying to start.

Re: 91 Camaro won't crank?

Not sure how old this post is but I just bought a 91 with the same issue. After some research on YouTube and other forums it's a very easy fix. Just take the panel off under the steering wheel and find the plug with a orange jacket and 2 white wires. Now I don't have a store that sells resistors so I took a couple out of an old Xbox 360. Just put two resistors together and jump both the white wires. It will bypass the security.

For anyone else trying to diagnosis this problem, first check your battery is not dead. The 1988 Camaro Shop Manual contains the following diagrams to help diagnose your issue:
