Quick firing order question.

Thanks for anyone who is reading or read this. I've used the search, can't find anything super specific.
OK so I forgot to mark distributer. So I read you put your finger the 1# spark plug hole and yadda yadda and turn the engine. Well. I have to use two hands to turn it over from the harmonic balancer? So I can't keep my finger over it. Is there any other way? Or easier way to turn. I gotta leave to work and the keys to the other car are gone

Re: Quick firing order question.

Check the muffler bearings, they are probably seized and making the engine hard to turnover.

oh and by the way

:3 I'd laugh if I wasn't in such a rush. I got no one to help by holding their finger over it. BTW my op is for serious.

Re: Quick firing order question.

Are you trying to figure out when the cylinder is at TDC or are you trying to figure out the firing order? The firing order should be stamped somewhere on the block or intake.

If you need both hands then take a shop rag and use your finger to push into the spark plug hole. Turn the engine over and compression will pop the rag out, pretty close to TDC for that cylinder.

Trying to find the order in which the plug wires go from the engine to the distributer.

it is MUCH easier to turn over if all the spark plugs are removed,
you can do it with one hand for sure and a 12" long wrench

otherwise pull the valve covers and watch #2 & #1 rocker arms.

18436572.....

If #1 is at TDC when you re-install the dist. the rotor should point towards #1. you can get this close enough to start the car then dial it in with the timing light. the firing order is 18436572... starting with #1 install the wires clockwise on the distributor.

Correction... the firing order for your motor should be committed to your memory... SBC & BBC s and pretty much all "old school" GM V8s are 1-8-4-3-6-5-7-2

unless you are dealing with LS engine & they just swapped 4/7 3/2
1-8-7-2-6-5-4-3 which is similar to Ford firing order...

Re: Quick firing order question.

Ok it popped out. Now the distributer rotor is pointing just before the **** on the cap. Is that one #1 or the one before it.

Re: Quick firing order question.

if #1 piston is at TDC then the rotor should be pointing to the #1 spark plug...
this is just a rule thumb

The rotor turn clockwise... so the terminal just ahead of where the rotor is pointing to the #1 plug is your #1 terminal on the dist cap.. then clockwise after # 1 is,... 8 then
4 then 3 theeeeen 5 theeeeeeeen 6 followed by 7 and finally... 2

1 8 4 3 5 6 7 2

Thanks. I was just having problems with figuring out which one was #1 ended up being the one that 1 past the one it popped out on. /shrug. I know basic questions like these prolly get asked a lot, but I truly appricate the help. Thanks everyone.
