91 camaro rs 305 tbi ... I need help bad
Hi I'm new to this site... And I hope some 1 can help .. I've been looking and searching the internet and any forum I could find on this car and no luck....
I have a 91 camaro rs 305 tbi. 700r4
The car runs great but The transmission was slipping .. So I got a used transmission and swapped it out.. Now the car still runs great in park or neutral and will idle up the street but as soon as I press the gas pedal it will die ... And them it will start right back up .. And do the same thang every time... It's like the fuel is cutting off...I also just replaced the fuel pump and filter.. Please somebody help!!!

There's nothing I can think of in the tranny that would cause it to die when accelerating, and if it ran well before...I'd first start by looking for something that came disconnected during the swap...sensor wire pulled, maybe crushed something during install, etc.
Now, about the fuel pump, assume you replaced it during the tranny swap, if so..why? It's not considered a "general maintenance" item.
Just trying to get a better picture of things.

I've trip pled checked all of the wires... And haven't found anything ... And the reason for swapping the fuel pump and filter was it was only showing 8 to 10 pounds on the fuel pressure gage and would drop down to about 6 psi in gear ..so I thought that was the issue... And the gas gage wasn't working... And I I'm glad I did that as some 1 had changed it before and used bailing wire to connect the hose inside the tank to the pump. And that hose had a big slit in the side of it and the sending unit float wire was broke off... But the only thing I got from that repair was a fixed gas gage and better fuel pressure... And the car still does the exact same thing...

Yep torque convert is bolted up as it should be... No knocks pings clunks or clangs either .. Like I stated it runs perfect it will idle in drive but as soon as u give it gas it will die.. Then it starts right back up and does the same thing over and over...

Any chance you can watch your fuel pressure while this is happening...I wonder if it's a bad pump?

I see....
So lets put things in order...
The car ran fine, but tranny slipped
Changed tranny-problem occurred
Then changed fuel pump and filter thinking (because of old pump) this was the problem?

Additionally, when you changed the pump...did you drop the tank, or make an access hole?
If you dropped the tank, you would have dropped the exhaust...possible that you may have knocked crud loose in the muffler, clogging it up or possibly bent the I-pipe?..if not disconnected from the cat....although this would probably just cause bogging and sluggish-ness, not dieing.
Can you hook a vacuum gauge to an intake port...monitor vacuum at idle, and then again at about 2000RPM.
You should be about 18-20inches/HG at idle, and should be pretty close at 2000...the more it drops off, the more restriction is in the exhaust. (PS, test in Park)

I dropped the tank..and took it out.. And I didn't have to drop the exhaust ... As it is cut off in front of the rear end... I will check the vacuum on it as soon as I get home from work...
And thanks to every 1 that has replied.... I will post my findings In a little while..

How long was the car down for?
I mean from the time you parked it with the tranny slipping, until you got the used one installed?

I think maybe you are just having a bad coincidence.
I think I'd start by resetting the IAC and verifying the TPS voltage is correct.
You may also want to check the vacuum line going to the MAP sensor, as well as test it as well.
Something may have been on the edge of failing/falling out of spec...and it just so happened after the tranny swap.
To reset the IAC, you just jump A and B on the ALDL, turn the key on (to run, don't start) for about 1/2 minute, the TPS check/adjustment will need a voltmeter, testing the MAP will need a VM as well...also, a hand held vacuum pump like a Mighty Vac makes it easier too.

I will do that right now as I'm off today.. And also I had another guy tell me to that the transmission could jus be bad he said to unbolt the tourque converter and and put it in drive and if it still kills it..-& if it does its a bad transmission.... So I'm going to try that also.. And I'll keep you posted...
And thanks for all of your help

Noooo!
Don't do that!
The flexplate will spin, probably destroy the majority of you TC nut-thingies (tech term)...not a good idea at all, IMO.
Besides, if the TC is not spinning, what would putting it in Drive do?
Would be just like in P/N...

That's was my thoughts also...
I wish I could just find out what's causing the problem... I also found it has a short in the column makes the horn go crazy..

Plus, without the TC spinning, there is no line pressure in the tranny...
But, your friend may (possibly) be on to something...
TV cable could be binding on something, as it was removed/replaced during the swap...as is the linkage/gear selector was as well.
I can tell you one thing for sure, gtting he car won't fix the issue

I don't have a clue what's wrong. With it... And if I gut it that would solve everthing... As I'd put a roll cage and a big block etc... Lol
But I'm determined to fix it before I do anything drastic..
