cut pipes under car?

Hi all

We put on the lift the car I'm about to buy. We saw that some pipes was cut and "sewed". Mechanic said it could be the exhaust gas recirculation pipes, cut to improve performances.

Question is: what are actually those pipes about?
There you have a picture I made (from another car). I dont remember the exact cut point, so I drew two circles.

Seeing those pipes cut is a good sign, or a bad sign, in terms of reliability and parts duration?

THANKS VERY MUCH

Those are fuel lines and I think brake lines. If they have been cut/put back together you may want to ask the owner why it was done.

Could be as simple as them repairing a line that had a leak.

If your mechanic thinks those are emissions lines, you may need a better mechanic.

EGR lines go from the exhaust manifold, to the valve, then to the intake. No emissions lines run back that far. Except for the smog pump but those run to the catalytic converter.

Re: cut pipes under car?

oh really??

It cannot be. That car runs good And brakes work.

It gotta be something else. I precisely remember two cut cables ad the mid of the car below that neither the owner knew why.

Maybe the emissions vapor lines? The man above is correct, those are brake and fuel. They rot and you can cut and replace sections. Myself, I just run new lines. The under of that car is cleaner then both of mine!

Re: cut pipes under car?

Those lines are:

Fuel supply
Fuel return
EVAP vapour
Rear hydraulic brake

If only a section of one or more was replaced, most likely reason is rust repair. Second reason might be that they were crushed by road hazard or misplaced lifting jack.

Re: cut pipes under car?

So it's impossible that any of those lines was cut somehow to improve performance?

==> that cut means a trouble?

Correct. The only reason those lines should have been cut, would be to repair them. One could be considered as an emissions hose, and that would be the vapor line from the fuel tank to the charcoal canister. There would be absolutely no performance gain from removing that line.

Doesn't really mean trouble, you just don't know why they were cut.

They were the EGR lines !!!

Is it helpfull to improve engine power?

They are NOT EGR lines. I can say that definitively. They are fuel and brakes.

The egr runs from the exhaust manifold to the intake, they would NEVER run them under the car.

Fuel and brake lines and that is it. Whoever is feeding you that information doesn't know what the hell they are talking about.

Why would the EGR run to the rear brakes and fuel tank when its meant to go straight to the intake?

Exhaust Gas Recirculation. It goes straight from the header, to the intake manifold AND NOWHERE ELSE.

Smog lines run from the cat to the headers.

The only emissions hose in that bundle is the evap line that runs from your gas tank to charcoal canister.

EGR lines? I'm wondering what lines an EGR valve would need that run to the back of the car. I've never heard of anything like this, before.

The EGR valve is used to reduce NOx emissions in an engine, and the EGR valve is installed on the intake. It opens during cruising speeds, and it directs a portion of the exhaust back into the intake for reburning. (I may not have worded that correctly. Surely, I've oversimplified this explanation.)

Removing it won't improve performance. That is, unless there's something wrong with it. A bad EGR valve will cause an engine to idle rough to the point of stalling. You can remove it, but if the engine needs to go through emissions testing, it won't pass. If you do remove it, you'll need to cap the ports on the intake.

If you want to cut them to "increase engine performance" go ahead. We will not be visiting you in the hospital. We will not attend your funeral. The moment you cut that fuel line you can kiss your *** goodbye. Same goes for the brake lines.

Re: cut pipes under car?

He may have meant EVAP lines. Although, there is usually one line for the EVAP system that runs from the charcoal canister to the gas tank. Those other lines are brake lines and fuel lines. Those are definitely not EGR lines.

That is the correct identification of those lines. None of them is an "EGR" line.

The car will run okay without the EVAP vapor line. You can get by without the return line if it has been converted to carburetor and a mechanical fuel pump (not likely). If the car is otherwise unmodified from stock, I would guess they were repaired.

Re: cut pipes under car?

sounds like the po dropped the tank (and didnt know what they were doing) that would explain why the e brake cables and fuel lines were cut ... just a guess

Re: cut pipes under car?

Those cut lines could probably be the Evaporative Emission Control ( EEC ) ones.

Re: cut pipes under car?

He's in Italy, and he wants to listen to his mechanic who thinks they are EGR lines. That's fine, he doesn't need to listen to avid enthusiasts online. Maybe the mechanic thinks EGR stands for Egregious Generation of Revenue...
