HELP! Can't get my car to start

What's up fellas, I know the title was a bit broad but I changed out my starter and then when I went to start my car it would start, wouldn't click, wouldn't turn over, when I turned the key to start literally nothing happened, put a new battery in it, checked the started and it's has power ( jumped it out) changed the ignition switch and still nothing, any suggestions? Has this happened to someone before? I appreciate any and all help I can get, really stumped on this one thanks a lot

Car Is Not Cranky . . . . SO I AM !!!!!!

Use a voltmeter or test light to probe the wire going to the solenoid power input.

Make the wire long enuff to bring into the cockpit.

Now, when you try to crank, but there is no click, is there power?

If yes, the solenoid is bad.

Check for a loose or dirty connection from the solenoid to the starter.

Once you clean or verify that connection is good but the problem persists, you can connect a wire to the M connection.

Make the wire long enuff to bring into the cockpit.

Connect a bulb to the wire, and ground the other terminal of the bulb.

Now, when you try to start, but it won't crank, observe if the bulb is lit.

If no, the solenoid is bad.

If yes, the starter is bad.

Anything else not working?

Did you put all of the wires back on the big terminal, along with the batt cable?

Re: HELP! Can't get my car to start

Thanks for the responses, gonna check the ignition wire at the solenoid with a voltmeter, I hooked all the wires up correctly and when I try and start my car all the lights come on when the key is set to on, once I turn to start all the lights go out, the temp gauge shoots up and the car doesn't make a sound, as if you went to start it without the battery hooked up.

Re: HELP! Can't get my car to start

Temp gauge shoots up = it's supposed to do that; it's the equivalent of the "bulb check" function for an idiot light system

All the lights go out = you have a bad connection somewhere

Probably something you disturbed but not necessarily. I'd suggest checking the voltage on the big red wires that feed power into the car, while the key is in Start. Likely suspects include fusible links, and their connections to the big red wires; and the batt cable ends.

Re: HELP! Can't get my car to start

Lets just back up for some context here - WHY did you go in there to change the starter in the first place? Perhaps the problem wasn't the starter to begin with..... please tell us your symptoms.

Re: HELP! Can't get my car to start

I initially changed the starter cause it wouldn't spin anymore, I turned the key to start and just heard it click but it wouldn't spin, after changing it now I get nothing, I was under there today and I have voltage at the post where the battery is connected to however, the post where the ignition wire connects to I had nothing, so now I'm thinking maybe it could be a neutral safety safety switch, perhaps the ignition switch I installed isn't adjusted properly, the ignition wire itself could be bad as well, hope this added info can stir up some new ideas, thanks again for all the help

Re: HELP! Can't get my car to start

Checking voltage is meaningless. You need amperage to spin that starter.

Obviously the solenoid wire needs to work - that's only going to have power with the igntion in the crank position. Are you checking while an assistant holds the key in crank?

If it only clicked before, then you likely have a main battery cable (power or ground) problem. Check the terminals as well. Is the battery fully charged? What's the voltage at the terminals? Fully charged should be 12.6

Re: HELP! Can't get my car to start

Yea I had someone in the car holding the key in the crank position, battery is good, brand new and had 12.4 volts, which is the same that I had on the battery terminal of starter, should I checking the amps at the ignition wire then? Either way it had zero volts there

No you definitely need voltage on the solenoid wire. And yes the inhibitor switch on the column is certainly a possibility. There is a cable from the shifter to the ignition switch on the column. You should definitely check that.

Re: HELP! Can't get my car to start

Ok I know it's been a little while, but update, I took the console apart and messed with the switches and wires on my B&M shifter and got the starter to spin, only thing now is the starter isn't engaging into the flywheel so that's the next obstacle. Tried to attach a video of what the starter does, my question now is I bench started the starter and saw the bendix drive shoot out, now that it's in the car it doesn't so do I need a new starter?
