1982 Camaro HVAC Vacuum

Hey folks, I have a 1982 camaro z28 originally a carb'd motor. I've swapped in a SBC and I've done the AC delete on the car. Now I have heat/cold (cable controlled) functions, but I have no control over where the air goes, currently it is going to the defrost vents on the windshield, and I can only assume this is due to vacuum. I do not have any of the vacuum canisters/diaphragms under the hood it was all removed by the P/O. I was curious can I hook a vacuum line to the intake, and this be where I get my vacuum source for the HVAC controls, or no?

Also, the little rubber connector all of the vacuum ports go to on the back of the HVAC controls is beyond reasonable repair, can this part be purchased? Is there a part number someone can throw my way?

I don’t think the vacuum rubber piece is available separately. You might source a used one in the classifieds section. The hvac gets manifold vacuum don’t hook to ported.

Where might I be able to get my vacuum source from? Intake is an edelbrock RPM air gap I believe, has a vacuum tree on the intake behind the carb. I'm assuming I would need a check valve installed in the line also?

Any passage below the throttle plates is manifold vacuum.
im not sure it’s needed but you can install a check valve.

Re: 1982 Camaro HVAC Vacuum

82-89 Heater ( Non-AC ) ventilation systems do not use vacuum in any way; They are cable controlled. Only the 90-92 cars use a vacuum ventilation system for the non- AC system.

Most people leave the original AC HVAC controller and (interior) AC Heater core box in place when converting to AC Delete,... and continue to use the vacuum system their car came with. If you converted the system by swapping in the (interior ) non-AC heater core box so you could use a non-AC controller than you removed all the vacuum solenoids because they are mounted to the heater-core box in a AC car. There is no-where to connect vacuum lines on a 82-89 Heater only Controller. The top **** on the Heater Controller adjusts the position of the air delivery "mode" flap in the heater core box; The RED and the BLUE cables control air delivery. ( Black cable controls temp.) Might want to double check how those cables are connected.......

Re: 1982 Camaro HVAC Vacuum

(The car was a 1982 Factory A/C car or so that's what I was told). So what I have is a cable that controls the blend door (hot/cold) lever. That works perfect currently. On the back of the controls I have a little rubber type connector with vacuum hoses going into it that plugs into the controls. This is what controls the doors inside the dash (from what I understand). The only thing I changed is the A/C box on the firewall of the car. I pulled all of the AC stuff out from under the hood. Installed a fiberglass A/C delete box, put in the heater type blower motor and cage.

I think one Vacuum line runs through the firewall (gets a vacuum source) from somewhere (off the manifold), and when you move the selector on the HVAC controls it transfers that vacuum to the other vacuum lines coming off of that rubber connector.

So to understand completely: you still have the AC Heater-core box installed and still have the AC controller installed. You did NOT convert it to the Cable system - correct ?

Yes,... you will need vacuum control for the air delivery mode ----> IF you are still using the factory AC Heater-core box and AC controller.

The system has "defaulted" to Defroster because that's what it does when it isn't getting vacuum properly. The bundle or colored vacuum lines gets connected to the AC controller at one end and to each of the AC Heater-box flap solenoids at the other end. The vacuum lines that connect to colored "Bundle" of lines to the controller come from the engine bay & are part of the HVAC wiring harness,... they feed thru the firewall behind the engine near the back of the pass side head. Black lines from the engine bay to PURPLE line on the bundle.

I'll see if I can find a that bundle of vacuum lines for Ya' later this evening.

Re: 1982 Camaro HVAC Vacuum

Yessir John, That is correct. I have the A/C controls still installed in the car. I removed the factory A/C box, and I installed a heater only box from ebay (Replica of the factory non a/c box) so I could retain my heater function. I found the black vacuum tube in the harness under the hood, I'll try connecting that to vacuum. The rubber connector I'll have to find used somewhere, or possibly use some silicone or epoxy to repair the torn parts on it. I also thought I could possibly seperate the vacuum lines and attach them individually to each port on the A/C controls, but that sounds like a hassle.

I appreciate your comments on this! Thank you!
