Gas in Oil

So for the past 6 years my wife has mentioned it to several different dealerships that her oil smells like gas each time she gets an oil change. They always tell her that’s not gas it’s oil smell.

She drives a 2017 Chevy Equinox.

Well fast forward 7 days after her last oil change she was having oil level issues. That turned out to be a spray all under the hood but there was no puddle underneath and dip stick was bone dry! We had it towed to the dealership. I suspected it was an internal engine leak! They said there is NO oil leak but the PVC valve needs replaced. Also a 3 part Complete Fuel Service. $3259

My question is if this has been going on truly for 6 years what kind of damage could’ve been done? She keeps yelling at me because she is suspicious that they know there is more wrong and it’s a $$$ grab because this is the actual dealership we bought her SUV from! Plus she’s had 18 oil changes there!

Thanks for your input! Have a great day/night! Be safe! Stay warm!

Re: Gas in Oil

Do you have the 2.4 or the 3.6?

The earlier 2.4 was known for excessive oil consumption, usually ended up needing pistons and rings. There's no special coverage on 2017 that I'm aware of, but it doesn't mean it isn't susceptible to the same issues

Re: Gas in Oil

The Equinox is a terrible vehicle. Do yourself a favor and have it crushed for scrap, and buy a third gen.

Also, do your own oil changes.

This is a forum for 82-92 Camaro & Firebird, not a general tech Q&A site.

it's a $$$ grab
Sounds like you need to quit taking your car to a stealership and instead learn how to fix minor stuff like this on your own.

this has been going on truly for 6 years
Musta got a bad injector from the factory. Fornicated since Day One.

If the oil smells like gas it's because there's gas in it. Not too hard to figure that out. For an older vehicle like ... 82-92 Camaro & Firebird ... with a mechanical block-mounted fuel pump, that pump would be the most likely cause. More likely however, since your car does NOT have that style of fuel system, your problem is a bad fuel injector. Chech with the sponsors of this board that sell fuel injectors; I think, for about a tenth of the money you've wasted at stealerships, and maybe a half-hour of your time, you can take care of it. Somebody on an Equinox (or related) forum could probably fill in the details WWWWWWWWAAAAAAAAAAAYYYYYYYY better than I ever could, though.

This is why I do ALL the work on my own fleet, to the greatest extent of my capabilities.

what kind of damage could’ve been done?
Probably not much, if she's kept it full of oil.

She keeps yelling at me
Maybe while you're at the girl stealership next time you can trade her in on a newer model that won't yell at you so much over stuff that's not your fault to begin with.

Re: Gas in Oil

The 217-inch (3-6/V-6) has known issues with the PCV system. There are LOTS of bulletins on it.

OPPS my bad! I didn’t realize that. Dang you would’ve thought I was a blonde. 🤣 If I would’ve just paid attention to the pictures!

I don’t have time to change her oil or do repair as I’m an Over the Road Truck Driver. I stay out 45 days at a time and come home for 2 but those 2 days off I’m consumed doing other things from the “Honey Do List”

Yes she stays on top of oil and the changes!

Shhh you know they say we truck drivers have girlfriends in every state. I’m NOT that bad but I do have 2 ones a female driver the other is another state!

I truly appreciate you advice and input!
