choke light

my choke light started coming on 2 days ago, however, it only comes on between 1000-1250 rpms and at any speed...no other time. i know the choke light is also the alternator light, but my alternator is only about 8 months old. volts are good from the battery and it seems the alternator is charging fine. i doubt its the alternator because the light comes on and off and i think the light would be on constantly if it was the alt (i know because the light stayed on a while ago, replaced alt and it was fine) anyone have any ideas?

Curt,

You may want to check the choke heater element wiring, test the element, and check the choke relay and its connections.

Mine did that one time, and I had to check with the mechanic, because I couldn't figure it out. Evidently there is a fuse that was blown that caused the light to come on--don't know where it is though, sorry.

It 'sounds' like the alternator isn't putting out enough at lower rpms. How is the battery? I ask because a bad battery(that still starts the car) can ruin an alternator over time. How many volts using a volt meter, not the guage, at idle.

i think you're right, 82camaro. it stalled 4 times today...all when i tried to stop the car for a turn of a stop sign. choke light came on and rpms dropped and stalled. i think its either the battery or the alternator. as soon as i get my hands on a volt meter ill let you know....

well....it was the alternator. checked the battery and it was good at around 14 volts. the wire coming off the choke was fine, so i went for the alt. put in a new one and bam. problem solved. thanks guys.....

Don't test the battery with a volt meter, you need to have it load tested. Most auto shops will test it for free. Glad you figured out the problem.
