'85 monte ss vs '85 TA

His car: 1985 Monte SS, 3.73 rear, L69, no other mods

Mine: 1985 TA, '89 305 TPI, AC delete, electric fan, flowmaster, gutted cat, AIR and smog pump delete.

Who would win? What HP/TQ did the L69 Monte's put up?

Thanks,

Matt

Since it has the L69 it has 190 hp and 240 torque. Should be mid-high 15s I think. You should be able to take him since you have the 305 TPI before they put the peanut cam in.

Yea, the engine is an '89 i think. No ninth injector. But then again, I haven't got a clue on what has been done to the engine. No CSI, but the '85 harness and ECM was retained. I cant find the block number. The cam may actually be aftermarket. A few mechanics have said it sounded like a mild one was in. But the car has a blown donut in the y -pipe and there were other problems at that time. So who knows.

I did know engine work other than keeping it running as well as can be. I am planning on building a 400 next summer.

How can I tell what cam is in?

Thanks,

Matt

I'm thinking the Monte has this one. Those L69s were no joke.

i'm going with the camaro

the monte may have more power, but not much if any. and he weighs a little more, plus his gears aren't all that great, a drivers race pretty much, but if u can drive, u should have him.

If it is a 89 tpi 305 then you will kill him. not even close those stock montecarslows usually run low 16's here thats with the 3.73 gears. the 305 tpi auto 89's (stock all the way)run mid to low 15's this is what I have seen and driven so unless you have some other eng. under the tpi I think you have him

Same engine and gearing. Pretty sure it's the same transmission too, so those times seem accurate. Any idea of the MPH?

Yep, our 84 SS went 15.4 back in 84. I think it had 6K miles on it or something close to it. At almost 90K miles, it ran a 15.7, still stock.

Yeh but those later year montes are slow. Honestly I've never seen a stock 85 or 86ss run anything near a 15. You've got him easily no problem and If you don't theres something wrong with your car. Those monte's are boats. I would expect a 16.5 his best. You should be mid-high 15's

For some reason, the 83-84 Monte's ran better than the later years. I've seen .5 second difference but it just doesn't make sense. 85-88 cars had 3.73 gears vs. 3.42 for 83-84. And you could get limited slip which wasn't available in 83-84. And they also had better gearing in the trans.

Our 84 would pull a couple of cars on the later ones. Best stock 85 I saw run was 15.9.

Well I raced him today and I won, barely though. I spun a little on takeoff. He was ahead a car length or so, I gained on him and pulled ahead about a half car length. By the end he was right on my bumper.

That was the closest race I ever had. Most are either me smoking some civic or me bein smoked by some gt.

Monte's got some power in them.

Matt

if you just edged him out you better start looking at changing the peanut cam in your car , tpi 305 's with a good comp cam will run in the 14;s , thats why it was a close race the monte has the l69 cam which is 10 times better than what you have
