1st kill with new engine!

Ok, here's the story... Went over to my buddies' shop and as soon as I got in there, a friend of mine said so and so called for a race. So I go down to another shop and there's a nice blue and white 69 Camaro. I thought to myself that I'm gonna lose. So we head out, both in 1st gear at about 10-15 mph with me back about a fender length. He nods that he's ready and I gun it. I jump a fender ahead of him, take it up to 6500 rpm, shift, goes sideways for a split second and I got a car on him. Take it up to 6500 again and shift to 3rd and pull away another car! I tapped my brakes and it was over with me beating him by 2 cars Dunno what we got up to but it was close enough to a 1/4 mile run.

We head back to his shop and he tells me that he built the engine 2 years ago. It's a SB 400, some aluminum heads, 292 cam, some fancy looking aluminum intake and a 780 vacuum secondary carb. Not sure what gears but it was an auto that shifted pretty firm. Damn it was fun! Now he's putting a different carb on, bumping up the timing and a couple other little tune up things. A few years ago my first race was against a 89 mustang this same guy owned and I lost big time but he wasn't driving. Still felt good to kinda get back at him

edit: fixed spelling mistakes

Hey great win. Sounds like you have a nice beast there. You never know what you are going ot get with 1rst gens. They can pack a lot of silent heat. One of the few cars that you pull up to and wonder if it is a 6 banger, small block or a heavey hittin' 502. They can be the ambiguous street killer.

Just looked around the Edelbrock site and I think the intake he has is the original Torker. When he started it up, it sounded healthy through the duals. He told me when we got back that he thought for sure I'd loose. I had stopped by there tuesday and only took off about 1/2 throttle but he thought it was WOT I guess lol. So damn funny cause he's a big street racer around here but not with that car. First kill was a good one

That was worth about 1,000 bucks to see the look on his face hehehe There's another race set up next week with a friend's 71 Chevelle. I know for sure that I'm going to loose against it. Ran 11.50's at the track on the motor. Still want to do it just for fun.

hey, i have that intake in my shed. i have the torker II on my 305 right now, it's alright, but i can't wait to get a dual plane. hey evilcartmen. why was your 305 so slow. didn't you run the torker II on your 305 as well? mine runs high 13's. what cam did you hav in it? comp ratio? hmmm. that th400 probably didn't help a whole lot either. what gears you got?

The 305 had stock heads, stock 8.6:1 compression, bad tune on the carb (come to find out later), XE256 cam and yes, the torker II. Still running the same 3.42 gears. My goal was to get it into the 14's with the 305 and I'm sure it was there before yanking it out. Another factor was traction, I had to launch the car from about 2300 rpm and roll into the throttle to keep from spinning the 215/60/15 tires hehe. It was still a lot of fun to drive around. lol I had a lot of people wondering why I put a TH400 in the car behind a 305. Always knew something bigger would be dropped in and I still might go with a big block later down the road or swap it into another car.

oh, ok, i am running ~9.5:1 compression, stock 416 casting heads, a crane blue racer cam with .442"i/.465"e 214*i/224*e on a 112 lsa. crane pushrods, crane timing chain, crane aluminum roller rockers, holley 600vacuum secondary, forged connecting rods, stock crank, all blowing through a set of full length heddman hedders and true dual moroso spiral mufflers. a 700r4 and a set of 3.73's out back with a powertrax locker. best mph of 95 with a VERY bad carb tune (had NO pump shot) and a best 60' of 2.16. with a better tune we should see 1.8-1.9 60's and a 98mph. with traction, that's a high 13.

Have a little update on this race hehe...
Friend of mine just stopped by and told me the guy who I raced bent a valve that day trying to beat me A spring retainer broke and the valve dropped down and hit the piston. Turns out he was reving that 400 to 7k - 8k trying to beat me Now he's got it all apart, doing some head work and putting in a bigger cam. I'm gonna try and get a NOS cheater kit before the rematch and run the 150 shot Plan was to use my car as a benchmark to see if what he does to his would make an improvement or not. Well, a little giggle gas will screw all that up and make him think he's running slower than ever Maybe wait a week before telling him I squeezed hehe.

This is what makes all the work worth it, a chance to compete with someone you know! I do the same thing with a friend of mine who has a 2000 mustang and we keep going back and forth with upgrades and every time we say we want to race, we both know we have done something new it's just a question of who did the better upgrade. My buddy hates to lose so if he says he wants to race me I always know that he has some dirty trick up his sleeve.

CompCams Pro Magnum RR's
CompCams 294S
* Duration at .050 in. cam lift: 248 intake/248 exhaust
* Gross valve lift: .525 in. intake/.525 in. exhaust
* Lobe separation: 110 degrees
CompCams Solid lifters
AFR 195 aluminum heads
ARP Head studs
Wiseco forged pistons, flat top (10:1)
Eagle ESP (H-beam) 6" rods

No times at the track yet, only a handfull of GTech runs that look way off. I can't hook up at all in 1st but I do have a set of sticky tires now. Soon as the weather clears I might try a pass on them. Dunno when I'm going to the track yet, hopefully soon but I have to get some things done to the car before heading out.

106 mph the last time out and my Garmin GPS said 110 mph. I stayed in the throttle a little after the gtech was flashing though. If it's not raining next weekend I'm gonna try jetting down a little. It's a tad rich at the moment, maybe up the squirter size too.

Yeah, I would assume 106 to be a totally low for your combo. Mine typically says 123-124 mph. Good luck!

I'm still thinking there may be a fuel delivery problem with the Holley black pump not putting out enough volume. Might be just enough to where it doesn't run the bowls completely dry but still leaning out too much. Lots of tweaking and things to be done

The G-techs are usually pretty close on the et. What et's were you getting?

Not sure of the rim size or backspace since I didn't buy them. The tires are Hoosier QuickTime Pros 26x11.50x15.

First time out when I was still running a torker II intake and a stuck secondary float, it was the same time my 305 ran, 15.21. The last one was 14.02 at 106 mph which is so damn pittifull. I spun most of the way through 1st and shifted at 6800 rpm. Might have a chance this weekend to put on the Hoosiers and make another test run. The 3.42 gears are hurting me too, want to stick in 4.10s.

When I went to the track with the 305 the first and only time, I brought my ET's from 15.86 down to a 15.21 just by not spinning off the line. 60 foot on that 15.21 was 2.19 on the 215/65/15 tires hehe. So I'm hoping with the sticky tires, it'll put me in the mid 13's the way it's tuned now. Kinda disapointed so far in how it's running but it'll get better once things are sorted out.

Hummm, just found out something very usefull yesterday. I hooked the car up to a smog machine and found out at cruise, it's very very lean. Here I was thinking it was rich due to a spot on the bumper Going to jet up and see what happens

Cartman would a good dual plane work better for you or does that victor work out pretty good ?

Victor Jr should be matched pretty well with what I'm doing with it. Pulls great to at least 6800 rpm and the torque converter is loose enough. I'm gonna change jets today if I feel well enough, been under the weather all week.
