88 Formula LOTS of mods, versus 69 AMC AMX with a built 390...predictions?
Ok so I have myself a grudge match at work. I work for the local performance parts Checker/Kragen, and amazingly, there is only TWO people actually interested in hot rods that are working for the "performance" checker. Which is of course me and the guy running the performance section. Long story short, he has this 69 AMX he's been telling me about, says its never been beaten, and of course I offered up a race. Here's his setup:
69 AMX
rebuilt 390 bored .030 over
STOCK heads ported, minor polish job
Custom Engle grind hydraulic cam
Torque Flight auto trans with 3,500 stall
3.23 gears
Some weird brand aftermarket intake (not edlebrock)
Holley 750 double pumper carb
Steel stock wheels, street tires
He claims the car weighs 3,100 pounds with him in it and its a full weight non-gutted car....I said BS.
here's my setup:
88 Formula
totally gutted except for carpet and two front seats
2,900 lb car weight
350 bored .030 over
Canfield cnc chamber aluminum 200 CC heads
Edlebrock Super Victor intake
Holley 870HP carb
Lunati solid cam, 249/259 @.050, .540 lift 106 lsa
Th350 with shift kit
3,200 stall 10inch converter
3.73 gears
E.T. drags
Convo pro slicks/skinnies
Now I'm betting that I'll take him, but he seems confident......so whats the deal with AMXs....are they all that and bag of popcorn? I'd like to think I have this race in the bag.......predictions..?

I don't think it will be much of a contest. Your car is a low 12 possibly hi 11 second car. He will most likely be in the 13's unless he's got more than he's telling you. It kind of reminds me of a guy I used to work with. He had a camaro that was never beat, but that was because he never raced anyone with a fast car. He ended up finally taking his car to the track and it ran a 13.8

Your car sounds stout as hell. Huge cam too. That AMX is toast as long as he isnt keeping anything from you. Especially on stock tires/wheel sizes, he aint gonna hook good at all.
Like the early Chevy IIs, those AMX's are light, and 3100 lbs is believable without him in it.
AMC had a few different castings for the 390 heads, but all flowed about the same, much unlike the many different offerings for the SBC/BBC. The 1970 head was the best, flowing around 225 intake and 155 exhaust at around .500 lift. Minor porting/polishing like he claims would put him in the 230-240 cfm range, and usually at a lift higher than .500
Regardless, I think it will be a proud moment for the 3rd gens... Go rip him a new one!
Edit: according to my father the AMXs guys had a cruel joke played on them from the factory. Apparently the speedo were off by nearly 15%, making the driver think they were going MUCH faster than they really were

Oh and I forget to mention, that 7.70 1/8 mile I pulled was all motor. I also have a 100% full functional 150 shot cheater system on top of that which I haven't tried at the track yet. Only tried it once on the street and it was INSANE. Should put me solidly into 10 second range, that is if the transmission holds up, which it won't.
Should be racing him this Saturday night or Wednesday for sure.

So why bother asking here for predictions? You know the outcome... Any chance you could hook up a trailer and tow another 3rd gen behind you as you race him? And get the win on video?
