Got beat by a 396 1st gen camaro

Ok, he had the 396 badges on the side, and some big *** tires on the back. The car was re-done all the way. Nice paint, new rear end(yes I saw it) etc.

He comes up to me at the light and I had my 200lb friend in mine (so the weight was a bit higer than i wanted )

I knew I was gonna get spanked, but hey it was a camaro and I would be honored to get spanked by it.

He revvs at me, I revv back. I have a totally open exhaust and thats what probably instigated the race.
I am thinking "yea right, I am getting murdered". But I did not back down.
My little TBI can help me a little bit at least.

So we both launch and suprisingly I am neck to neck with him.
My friend is just looking at me, "what the **** man" than he floors it, and I downshift to second. He has almost a car on me and is pulling bye bye. I start to catch up a bit (a bit, like 2 cars away bit.), and he has almost two cars away. It was held at this and we slowed down. The guy looked over and I gave him thumbs up.

He asked me what I was running, and I told him 305.
He was pretty amazed, and told me he ran about 80% of what he had, and without NOS.
All in all I got spanked, but I was suprised that I held my ground as well as I did.
He did not have a roll cage, so I am thinking that he might not be running 12 or so, but I could be wrong.
It was a nice car, and I was happy that I got spanked by it.
Than again I acted like a real man afterwards by crying like a little bitch.

If he indeed had a 396 he more than likely had a '68 or '69 and one of the 352, 350, or 375 hp ratings for that year. Chances are it was modded as well since there aren't many "stock" nice ones out there.

Hey for about 5 secs. we were head to head. But he took over easily . He beat me by car and a half, and I kept it that way. Than we slowed down (In an area that is nutirously known for large quantities of cops).
I was just suprised how well my TBI 305 kept with it. I am sure he was not going all the way on it, but hey it was his fault.
He was suprised that I had a 305. He thought it was a 350, and I got thumbs up too!
Than we went on playing, well... mostly him revving and taking off a bit. I tried once and took off in second, but there was really no reason for me to do it.
It was fun, and I never mind getting smoked by a camaro like that.
I once had a second gen with a highly worked 403 Big block. That car had a wild cam, and I mean WILD cam. It idled loopey but it was mean in the higher RPM.
I raced 3 cobras with it, and easily beat them by over a car lenght.
However my LO3 has few years to go, in order to meet that preformance level.

I wondered if I had a 125, or 100 hp shot of wet N20, what would'ev happened??

I JUST moved from 26th and Kendall in Edgewater to Tower and Hampden in Aurora. Otherwise I've lived in Golden all my life.

I've only ever raced two Third gens when I had my car worth racing. One was a stock black IROC going up the on ramp of 6th Ave at Indiana in Golden. The other was one with a big block hood some where down on South Wadsworth. The big block hood guy I would have put in the mid 13's, but since we were going from a roll I would have beat him.

hmmm...i don't know, cause i kinda like beating people with as little throttle as possible. kind of a crazy satisfaction, you know, to beat someone with only 40% throttle...it's great.

If you are talking about a 403 Olds in a second gen TA, thats not a big block....its a small block.

I've always been told what RB83L69 says in this thread, https://www.thirdgen.org/techbb2/sho...ck+small+block.

OBTW - there is no such thing as a Pontic or Olds or Buick "small block" or "big block". They're all big. There are "tall deck" and "short deck" versions of them, but the block is the same length, bore spacing etc.; the same cranks and cams go into them even. In the Pontiac product line, the 301 is the short deck, and the 326, 389, 400, & 455 are tall deck. In teh Olds line, the 307, 350, & 400 are short, and the 400 and 455 are tall.

Coming from a former 403 owner and now a 455 poncho owner i can tell you 100% that there is no big or small block pontiacs, only large and small journal engines but in the oldsmobile engine family there is a SBO and a BBO. Heres a nice link to an FAQ about olds motors and the discerning differences between the differnt types (sbo, bbo, diesal, gas-diesal ect...). Hope that helps.

I've seen big block engines! and 403 defenetly looks like a big block.
Its way bigger than the 350 I built!
So, its a big block!
