F-bird VS bonnevile

my one friend won't stop pestering me about my firebird haveing a v6 so i figured i would put this on here. I have a 90 firebird 3.1l v6 auto 83k with dynomax ultraflow exhaust and home made coool air intake. he has a bone stock 90 bonnevile wich has a 3.8 v8 100kish and is fwd. now my question is can i destroy him now or do i have to wait for the headers i am planing to get.

Re: F-bird VS bonnevile

The 3.8 is a potent motor. By the way, I believe that it is a v6, not a v8. I also hope that his is not the SSEI, don't know if they made those in 90, which is supercharged and then you will definitely get smoked.
However, if you put in the headers on your bird, and also get a chip for it, and you your exhaust has been setup good, you might be able to beat him. The naturally aspirated 3.8l Boneville from that time makes about 165 hp, but weighs a good amount because of its luxury options. You should be able to get that much power out of your 3.1l with full exhaust and the chip, and your car is lighter.
Get the headers on and possibly a chip from hyperteck for your car, and then race him. You will probably surprise the crap out of him.

Re: F-bird VS bonnevile

The 1990 Bonneville's 3.8L is rated at 165hp @4400rpm and 210 ft.lbs of torque @ 2000rpm. It is a very robust motor, but the 87-91 Bonnies tip the scales at 3800lbs. Your 3.1L, stock has 145hp and 180ft.lbs. of torque. The good news is your Bird probably weighs about 3100lbs, plus you got 3.42's out back the Bonnie's got 2.93's or 3.29's. And the Bonnie's pulling all of it's weight. Hell, you'd probably take him with your stock set-up.

Re: F-bird VS bonnevile

No, you are looking at the GVWR sticker. The GVWR includes the vehicle weight and maximum allowable passenger and cargo weight. The GVWR is usually vehicle weight plus 800-1000lbs. for most passenger vehicles. When looking at the GVWR sticker also look at the max luggage and pass. weight(usually 1000lbs). Then subtract that weight from the 4200 you see on your sticker and what's left will be your actual vehicle weight.

Re: F-bird VS bonnevile

I stand corrected about the weight. I had an '87 Delta 88(H-Body) same body style as the Bonnie. My Delta was also a Royale Brougham, it was like 36-3700lbs. It had the same 165hp 3.8L but had a lot more luxury crap and different interior than your friend's Bonnie LE. And my max horsepower was 4400rpm, but I know the 3.8L was a forever evolving power plant and still is.

You win by default because your friend is under the impression that he has a v8 Bonneville. Also because he has some notion that his 3.8L V8 (hah) is fast.

Re: F-bird VS bonnevile

or you could save your money and dont buy any parts and sell your v6 then put a v8 in then race him.

Re: F-bird VS bonnevile

just show him under the hood maybe show him the spark plug wires, for my buddies that dont know Sh$t about engines i jus tell them to count the spark plug wires, works for most vehicles but if they cant tell a 4cyl apart from a v8 no sense in trying to teach them anything.
