what do i need to do to beat a 97 convertable mustang GT?

i have an 88 l98 iroc, and the only other car at out school that is fast is the 97 GT. i want to know what i need to do to the iroc to beat him. i know the convertables are heavier but he still has more horses that me. can i beat him with the stock iroc? what should i do, i won't settle for second place.

Hey man,

You don't have much to worry about, that Stang is a mid 14 sec car stock, plus a tenth or two casue its a vert and has in the 250ish HP range. If your car is in good tune it should be a close race if you hook up.

To win for sure I think bolt on mods should be enough (K&N, pulleys, headers, cat-back) as well as the free mods (port plenum, etc) and of course a full tune up.

Hehe,

Mid 14's was just a guess since the 01 GT's run low 14's (I think) I guessed teh 97 Vert would be a couple notches lower. Oh well

the 4.6 mustangs are dogs especially if they are auto. Auto mustangs are jokes. Low 15s for the 5spd 4.6 hardtop, high 15s for the auto hardtop. Motor trend tested a '96 4.6 automatic hardtop mustang and managed a huge 8.0 second 0-60 and a 16.1 in the 1/4 mile. Is this guy's mustang auto or manual?

Dood, a 5spd 97 GT no convertible is mid to high 14's. I don't think they ran around 15's. A convertible with 5spd maybe high 14's to low 15's and even worse if its an auto. If the GT has any bolt ons or the performance gears (3.23's). Black 5.7 GTA I don't konw where you get your numbers from but I ran a GT with headers and exhaust and he was at my bumper by 2nd. And his 88 L98 that is 13 years outta tune may take a fall, not to mention the condition of the transmision.

Yeah, the IROC-Z's with the L98's have been known to even run 14.2's sometimes, u will win.
Okay, my friend has an 89 Formula 350 and he cant keep up with me, we were dead even stock vs stock so he can run a 14.4-14.5. Thats G92 did i mention and he had a catback to my stock everything alogn with rusted out pipes with exhaust leaks? My other friends 89 Iroc w/o gears, full exhaust (headers and catback), ignition upgrade, no cats, chip, tune up, and smog removal and cats removed ran a 14.0 @ 98mph. Heh, an L98 run COMPLETELY stock a 14.2, that'll be the day.

I say his car stock runs high 14's to low 15's. Don't count that GT out, as much as I hate rustangs, those 4.6's can wind up really high (friend has a 97 cobra) and i thought they put out around 240-260 hp and 300 lbs/ft of torque. BTW the 94-95 Cobras ran mid 14's and that was as fast as the 5spd GT's, now thats the 5.0 engine but Ford isn't THAT stupid and built their cars better[bold]almost[/bold] every year. I say you take him because of your torque but no more than 1-2 car lengths.

If its manual, its close, if its an auto, your all game (most rustangs are autos, so the chicks can drive em).

LOL, u don't think so huh. I'll tell u right now that I've seen test results from various sources (magazines, sites and stuff) that have ran IROC-Z's and the 91-92 Z28's 14.2. LOL, BigMike 92 Z28 ran a 14.1 ALL STOCK.

Do they all run that, no, but there are some. U think because your friends IROC doesn't that not any if them do?? The Formula also doesn't have as good as an intake that the Camaro does, that makes a differance also. Like I said, do they all run that no, thats why I said sometimes in my other post, but there are some that can.

90IROC-Zee,I think you are over estimating that stang, and underestimating the GTA.You are right,a 97 COUPE with 3.27's is a high 14 sec car,not a heavier(almost 200lbs)vert with the standard 2.73's(I believe the 3.27's were not available on a 97 vert)go to www.corall.net and see what those cars are running, most are in the low 15's.I ripped a friends 98 5spd coupes a$$ which has 10hp up on a 97 plus he had Flowmasters and K&N,when I was bonestock without a tuneup.BTW,I get my numbers from various sources(manufacturer specs, mags, internet boards, personal track),and are a composite which best represents the car with good conditions and driver.BTW,look at my sig and see what I ran with justa tuneup and knew GSC's.Although, its rare stock 90-92 F-body's have gotten in the 14.2-14.0 range totally stock(you can't fault the car because of driver)

i was at the track one day and there was aguy runnig 15.97's in a vert 96-97 auto GT. so i wouldnt too much about him...who said most stangs are auto so cjicks can drive them?
you've gotte be smoking some cheap rock!
considering auto is a more expensive option and most mustang owners want a manual how can you say that?
i see more "woman" driving f-bodies anyway,
my girlfriends first car was a GTA , her mom has a '98 TA and heer sister drives a '88 formula . before the TA her mom had a '96 RS 5SPD camaro.
i'll lay money that if GM offered a tranny that could withstand an L98. there would be alot more manual tranny tpi cars running around... but wait ! what would the chickies DRIVE ??????????????
? a civic SI ????
dude dont sweat that GT, you could really sand bag him and hide a 150 horse spray kit real good. and say " all these L98run this good"

Uh my buddy has a G92 89 Iroc with catback all freemods, and ignition and brand new tires i walked him hard in 2nd. 14.12 bet the track u raced at was a bit off. ive been to the track quite often even the thirdgen gathering and i saw 14.2s off a car with every free mod l98 and exhaust. 194k miles, that'd be a first 2. im gonna wave the flag on this one...

for the most part the new GTs are nothing to worry about. the 5spds may egg ya on for some trouble but auto verts or even 5spd verts are bad. the NEW NEW GTs (99+) are ones to be reckoned with. even the autos i say race him dont burn out in first and you should have no problem.

Well you can wave the flag all you want but I have more than enough witnesses and the time slip to prove it. I guess I should mention that the 14.12 was run in low 40 degree weather.

My car would run 14.2s and low 14.3s all day long with no problem. Also whats to say that the track you were at wasnt "a bit off"???????????????
