Is this a solid start?

Not sure if this is the correct place to put this, but here I go...

Ok, I have an '87 305 TPI, and I'm trying to formulate a plan on getting some performance out of her this summer when I start workin. This is what I have so far...

1)Full exhaust, not sure which yet, either full hooker or full MAC
2)AFPR
3)a little ignition upgrading - MSD coil, cap, rotor, and wires

I had bigger plans, but came to this conclusion after I started realizing that I'm not gonna have alotta money to work with. I think I covered the bases fairly well, I've got better flow from the exhaust, more fuel from the AFPR, and a hotter spark from the MSD upgrades. I want your opinion guys, are the small MSD upgrades and AFPR going to add noticeable HP ontop of the full exhaust or am I just wasting my time and hard earned $$$? Can anyone recomend some good upgrades? I'd prefer not to do anything huge like cams, gears, etc etc because when you get into that, I want to do it right, so if you say "you need a better cam" I start thinking new cam, roller rockers, springs, pushrods, etc etc and it adds up...

Anyone?

The best mod is a complete and very thorough tune up. then think about upgrading.

Yep, already done that...

Got the timing reset when it was at the dealer getting the rear end/differential fluid changed/flushed(had them do it since we dont' have a timing gun nemore), GM wires and coil, new cap, rotor, wiring harness went out and it was changed, took out the fuel pump with it, got a new one from a local Fbody yard, fuel filter, K&N airfilters, mobil 1 supersyn 5W-30, PureONE filter(no more FRAM for me!).

Overall she's running strong, just runs out of breath at 4500rpm, and for some reason doesn't shift till 5500rpm or so....??? 700R4 w/2.73 posi. Not sure what the deal is there... Adjusted the TV cable, helped some but nowhere near alot.

Stealth ram would be a bit much for a 305 I think... then I'd need a new cam... if I got a new cam I'd want roller rockers.... and then it begins. I just can't afford that.

Ok then, why don't you port the plenum, get some slp runners, and saiamese the base 2 inches deep? that will help it breath, the base is the most restrictive part in our 305 engine if i'm not mistaken. The exaust you'r planning to get will be good also.

I'd get full exhaust, all Hooker about $525.
Then add a higher stall TC.
I wouldn't bother with the ignition. I would get gears first before TC normally, but seeing you don't have a lot to play with the TC would be easier to install unless you find a whole rear end. Then I'd get one with 3:42s.

I think a TC and SLP headers are your best opts. for some noticable gains with out getting too major things or using NOS

Do the exhuast, SLP headers and Catback of your Choice.

Then, Look at opening up your Intake as much as you can w/ your die grinder. Siamese the Base If You Want to take it off. Should help Alot.

AFPR is also a good idea, get the Holley.

If You want to do this for real, Get the PROM burning Equipment Now. its under 250$ for the entire setup.

PI TC would be a good ET dropper, but they are pricey )

Gears will also help, But I wouldnt go Deeper than 3.42 W/ the TPI.

Sounds like your on the right track, and have the right attitude. You Will Do well here

HG, when you get that far save yourself some cash on the AFPR and modify the stock one, there are plenty of posts on how to do it on here, and will cost you less than $5 rather than a $50+ afpr from someone else
