Retro Fit ?

Well I spun a rod bearing the other day and my friend is selling his 383 short block which is a 4 bolt main and 2piece rear seal block. So if I buy this block can I stick my OE style cam in there and if so what modifications will be needed. I know I will need aftermarket lifters already.

Yes, you can run a late model "step nose" cam in an early block by using a late model timing chain and a spacer kit. The timing chain is available anywhere. The spacer kit is available through Lingenfelter Performance 219/724-2552.

Best move I made was to step up to a 383!

I'm not all that sure, but if the block is not made for a rollercam, you will have to get a retrofit kit to keep the roller.

Retrofit refers to the roller lifters. Nothing needs to be done to the block.

and a cam button. seeing as there is no provision for a cam retainer plate.

So I need a cam button, aftermarket roller lifters, and a spacer for a roller timing chain right?

Yep, but your leaving a lot of performance on the table to swap the stock l98 cam in there. I'd look at upgrading while you were at it.

Or simply keep the roller cam out and buy a regular old flat tappet cam...like I did for my 406...

Nothing wrong with that and for all the positives about a roller cam, it is still expensive and a PITA to use in an older block...That is my opinion about it, and it won't change....

Comp and Crane both have some flat tappet cams that are close to the specs of your current cam, but not exactly as much duration.

Look around and you should be able to find what you want for a reasonable price.
