Please help find BUZZING sound!
I am getting a strange buzzing sound coming from the distributor area on my TPI 305. It sounds like an electrical buzz, not a friction, or metal on metal. It only does it after the engine is completely warmed up, and at idle. If I give it a little throttle, even 2-300 RPM, the buzz goes away, until it goes back to idle. I recently rebuilt the heads, put on ceramic coated headers, MSD 8.5 wires, platinum plugs, MSD coil etc. I wonder if I have the wrong coil, or is there anyway that there is interference from a coil wire and a plug wire? I do have the wires routed so that they all run right next to each other, next to the coil. Any help would be great. Thank you.

ever since my engine swap I have a sound coming from my firewall area that I hear in the car, might even be under the dash. It almost sounds like an electrical motor or something, i guess it could be described as a buzz. I have no idea what it is. I think mine is more constant that you describe. Its not loud
are we describing the same problem, do you hear yours in the car or under the hood?
what is it?

86FyrBird, I am not sure if we have the same problem or not. Mine is not very loud, but loud enough to hear over the headers, hi-flow cat, MagnaFlow muffler, all while inside the car. If I pop the hood, it can be heard plainly there also. It is coming from the firewall, distributor, coil area, but I can't pinpoint where. And it only does it at normal operating temp, and at idle.
The link that rezinn gave us some good info, but I don't see how it could be the same situation as ours, or mine at least. I have less than 800 miles on brand new injectors that I put on two summers ago.
Hopefully, someone will have some ideas for us to check out. Thanks.

My injectors are bought used, they came with the fuel rails, but they were bought by a seller w/ great feedback on ebay and said to be removed from a car that just got into an accident and was a perfect strong runner up untill it was totalled.

Check the EGR solenoid. If it is cycling it will sound like a buzz. I had mounted mine on the firewall and had to relocate it because it was driving me nuts. You can check to see if it is cycling with a scan tool. EGR duty cycle is what you what to look at. You could also just disconnect the electrical connect and see if your noise goes away.

hmmm that might be it, my EGR is removed, maybe when the shop removed it when putting in the new engine they left it on there.

Just because you didn't touch it doesn't mean it can't be the problem. Easiet way to be sure is to just unplug the electrical connector from the EGR solenoid and see if the noise is still there. It is an electrical part and they do fail. Just my .02 worth.

I have also been told that I should check the electrical connections on the unit that is connected to the air pump. A teacher at the local tech school told me to disconnect the two wires, one at a time, to see if that eliminates the buzz. If it does, he said there is some valve or unit in there that is faulty. If I unplug the EGR solenoid, and the buzz stops, what is likely the actual problem? Thanks for the help. I will be trying the air pump unit soon and egr solenoid and then get back to you guys. Thanks again.
