Mod suggestions for a 350 TPI

I have a 91 Trans AM GTA with a 350 TPI and I am going to be doing a lot of work in the spring. I need some suggestions. I have about $2,000 to spend.

My current setup:

350 TPI V8 (100,000 miles but runs great)
WS6 Performance Suspension (10 bolt drum rear)
Auto Trans (700R4 i believe)
Hooker AeroChamber Cat Back Exhuast
SLP Airfoil, K&N Air filter, and coolant bypass.

I want to put on a Ram Air II hood and install a ram air inktake.
(I know its expensive but it just looks mean)
I also want to put in a custom chip)
I am also definaltly getting slicks or drag radials

My best ET was 14.5 at 93mph on street tires. I belive my 60 foots were 2.1

Let me here your suggestions. If possible I would like to get into the 12's or low 13's.

Headers are defintely #1.

From there, it depends on how far you want to go into your engine.

A computer friendly camshaft, ported heads or aftermarket (I've heard wonders about the Vortec heads, but you have to buy the matching intake manifold from Scoggin Dickey,) and the HSR (Holley Stealth Ram) is a good way to spend $1500-$2k.

And don't forget roller rockers to free up friction in the valvetrain.

Have Fun!

The headers definatly sound lieka good idea. Are there any other street legal headers you can recomend besides SLP? Im not sure if I wanna spend $500 on the headers alone. I am considering the stealth ram intake, but may look into new runners instead to keep the stock look.

slp runners = $250
siamesed plenum = free
hi flo base (edelbrock or tpis big mouth) = used $200-300 ($400 new)
bigger tb = $200 used
hedman shorties = $240 or less coated, about the same for long tubes
headwork or vortec heads = $600+
(as mentioned you will need a vortec base for tpi)
catback w/ hi fo cat = $300
bigger injectors = $100-$150

that'll give you some decent times and blow your 2k.

I would suggest a converter, best mod for nearly any auto.

Also, do they sell Long Tubes for Fbodies? If so get them and a corresponding Y pipe, I LOVE mine to death.

My cousin has Heddman shorties, and if he ever gets his car on the road I will let you know how good they are!

You can get a set of Edelbrock TES headers for mid-$300 range and they are smog legal. If you have lofty goals for your car then you should go with the SLPs though. I have the Edelbrock TES headers now on my 383 and they are probably limiting my HP potential. If I would have known what I was going to add heads/cam etc then I would have gotten the SLPs instead.

Well, im hoping to get as close to a 12.0 as I can. My biggest help is definatly gonna be drag radials or slicks, since I know the powerband on my tpi is all low end. I am pretty good on my 60 foots, but my top end is just plain horrible. I know that is mainly becasuse of the tpi.

My top end upto 5,600 rpms is GREAT. It doesnt fall on its face at all. But, I ported everything (SLP runners, base, and upper Plenum).

I would get the Vortec heads with upgraded springs - 600.00
Comp cams - XR269HR-12 - 260.00
SDPC vortec TPI base intake - 400.00
SLP runners - 250.00
SVO 24 lb injectors - 215.00
Custom chip from Ed Wright for new combo - 350.00

Your pretty close to 2 g's at this point

Having fun with ALL the added horsepower from your new parts - Priceless

1bad91z, I love your setup. You have given me a pretty good idea of what i want, but with other options suchs as slicks, ram air, and headers, im going a bit over $200. Are the injectors necessary. I believe im running on 22lb stock injectors now. Also are those vortec heads iron or aluminum? lmk Thanks.

The vortec heads are iron. 350 HP at the flywheel is very possible with the combo I listed for you to buy. The new injectors aren't completely necessary, but I would want new injectors if I was going through all that trouble to redo the top end of the motor!

Go with vortecs, there definiley the best bang for the buck.

You can pick up a great set at www.wheelermotorsports.com

12.0's are not easy to do,, its going to take some serious mods. And remember When you put slicks on, that puts a lot more strain on your rear end, and our 10 bolts dont last so long around here with slicks.

Id suggest somehthin like 1bad91z suggested.

-Comp Cam,, maybe the gm lt4 hotcam?? something like it
218/228 duration@.50,, 525/525 lift, with 112lsa.

- Vortec Heads from wheeler---600

---Vortec Tpi Base-----------400

-1.6 Roller Rockers-----200

--2500-28000 Stall converter----200-500

---Edelbrock/Headman---Headers---300

---SLP RUNNERs------200---(I think AS&M runners are better??)

----Port out ALLL of the intake stuff, runners plenum/siamese??

Your looking at around 2 g's there.

Thats pretty much my setup,, except Im using a diffferent cam.

AND YES YOU WILL NEED A CUSTOM CHIP!!!, but I know a guy who can get you one for 100bucks. He did mine,, and I havent started my car up yet,, but Ill let you know when I do.

Id say that setup--Will get you in the 12's. However 12.0's are going to take more work then that.

Suspension mods, gears,, tranny upgrade, shift kit,, Moser axles, dR's. etc.

Out

I'd suggest getting good headers first.......Hooker 2055's if you want shorties (smog legal), or Hooker 2210 for longtubes (smog ILLEGAL).

Then I would suggest the Holley Stealth ram. You CANNOT use vortec heads with them, though. Use Pro Topline Lightnings's. You'll definitely want a bigger cam to match, and then get a custom chip.....you'll be going fast then.
