I'm going to be using those same heads on my car. I am going with a bigger cam though. I'm going with a CompCam 218/224.

The cam and heads are fine. If you look in the tech info section at the LB9 roller cam for the 88 model year, you'll see that it's a bit beefer yet in terms of duration. You could go one step up from there. My LB9 idles real smooth but then the stock cams have a very large LSA.

One thing you might consider, is haveing a 1.6" exhaust valve put into those heads. I think one guy here put 1.94 and 1.6 valves into his 305 heads and it worked great.

I realize you are putting this cam in a 305, but I had it in a 355 and it was WEAK! If you're going to go into the engine put more cam in it. Remember:

If Some is good!

More is BETTER!

And too much is JUST ENOUGH!

You have and '86 right. IIRC you have to use a flat tappet cam like me. I would look at getting a set of 1.6 roller tip rockers. I am using 1.5 roller tips on mine but that's just because a friend is giving them to me for a really good price.

I ran that cam in my 86 IROC's 305 with the stock heads, if you're stepping up the heads I'd go with a slightly larger cam. See if you find something that specs out around 210/220 @.050, around .450/.460ish lift. I don't have a cam in mind, just something around there (or maybe slightly more lift if you can find something that isn't too much bigger on the duration).

Do you have headers and such already?

Edit, check out the CompCams XE256, it looks pretty good to me, 212/218 @.050, lift of .447/.454, try some 1.6s if your budget will allow (and you've already gotten headers)...

That 212/218 would be a good choice. If you plan to install a higher stall converter I would go with the 218/224 or 224/230.
