Custom Cold Air Intakes
Custom Cold Air Intakes
i'll be making my own cold air intake kit for my 87' iroc 305 soon.
i did a search,and found the plans i need,but i have one question.
most people have the filter going down towards the passenger side fender, where the vacuum resivoir is. my battery is there, and the vacuum resivior is on the drivers side. it seems easier to go towards the passenger side,as opposed to the drivers side.
should i try to rig it up so i can go to the drivers side,if nothing is in the way,or just go near the battery?
thanks again

I know this is old, but no one seems to want to address this situation.
I'm in the same boat. I can't see running the pipe over the upper radiator hose to be that efficient. Relocating the battery to the back is expensive, and to the other side significantly lengthens wires because of the alternator being on the passenger side like the battery. I also see the filters set atop the battery.... which doesn't seem to "cold" to me. The factory TPI air intake setup is costing me 5-7HP. When I take it off on the dyno, I gain that back. So if it's unrestricted and cold, I hope for another HP or two.

It's not sealed, so it wont be NHRA legal. I do race at the track, so that's a consideration.

Plus remember if you put your battery in the trunk you need to have an on/off switch out the back of the car.
run it to the drivers. My car came w/ basically the SLP cold air kit. This was stock for my GTA. My battery is factory on the driver side, so my air intake went to the passengers. Either fab up an intake placing the filter onthe driver's side, or relocate the battery to either the driver's side or the trunk and route to the passengers. - also, if you run a gel or dry type battery, it doesn't have to be enclosed to be NHRA legal...

I am familiar with the GTA setup. Runs to the passenger side. I had considered moving the battery to the driver's side...

Hawks Thirdgen has something like that already that you can buy. IMHO I wont do anything. The air coming in is pretty cool from that place already. The best thing you can do is cut out the air box below the filter, and take out all the baffling underneath.
My problem is the shell over the radiator is too small. Costs me 7HP on the dyno.

Have any of you tried putting the filter right onto the tpi opening, like they do on impalas and caprices, when making cold air intakes.

You mean, bolt the filter to the throttle body diectly?
That's alot of hot air, if that's what you mean.
