New TPI Cold Air Intake MAF

OK, I finally have a picture of my cold air intake that I can post. In the picture you can see my modified TPI and the LT1 elbow. The tubing is 3.5". Allen

I may have missed this in another post, but did you find that it helped you performance wise?

Hi

I did not take before and after dyno runs with it. However with the restictions of the stock Pontiac intake system I would have to say a big yes. Dyno Don picked up about 16HP with this mod alone on his Firebird. I feel the weak spot in this system is the MAF. So what it flows is what the rest will flow. Allen

Looking good. How about one for the Camaro? The place you put your filter is were my battery is, and the spot your battery is I have some kind of charcle filter. Any ideas on what to move were?

The camaro has a better intake/ducting set-up. It will breathe more air than most TPI's. (if not all). And it's already cold air from the factory.

...but, you could move the battery to the back, or delete the vapor canister.

Hi

Where my filter is now was where the charcoal filter was and of course the original airfilter assembly. I relocated the charcoal filter over next to my battery. In your case I would do the same. However yours will be on the opposite side of mine. I believe that is what VincentZ28 did on his Camaro. If he sees this post he might comment. By the way he is running a 12.69 @ 110mph and is fixing to lower that et.

I don't know if you noticed but I have boxed off the hot air from the engine compartment. What you don't see in the picture is the "L" shaped foam rubber pieces glued to the underside of the hood to completely seal off the airfilter compartment from the engine compartment when the hood is closed.

It can only draw air from the front of the vehicle and the wheel well. You can barely see one piece of foam between the radiator overflow tank and the fender to seal off that area.

Another thing you cannot see is the transition pieces of plastic I made to go from the 3.5 inch diameter of the tubing to the 2.890 inch internal size of the MAF. These slope nicely to make a smooth transition. They are at both ends of the MAF under the rubber hoses. The LT1 elbow is also 3.5" at that point. Allen

Hey Allen, move your IAT sensor to the elbow. This way your car will not run lean at high RPMs. It will read the cooler air before it reaches the plenum. It works for me and the car idled better. I don't have track times with my cold air intake yet but I will on 3-26-05 at California Speedway Drags.

Hi Vincent

Thanks for the tip. That will be a mod I will do after the April 8 run races at Fontana. Hope to see you there. You already know I can't make the March 26 date. Allen

I am getting ready to start to build mine and was just curious to know what size filter you have on the end of yours.

The filter is K&N part number RE-0920. It has a 3.5 inch inlet. Allen

Looks really nice. On the topic, here's my custom MAP intake resulting from my conversion to MAP .

Hey r3pp3r I see some horsepower waiting for you. That stock Pontiac intake system is a horsepower killer. You need to go the custom CAI route. Take a look at what Dyno Don did in the Southern California section. He picked up 16 horsepower. You might pick up more with the Accel Superram. Allen

These are pictures of Dyno Don's home made cold air system in the making in a 1990 Trans Am. A 3 1/2in tubing was made for the proper fit.

And this is after it was installed and powder coated.

Sounds like a good summer project. 16 hp is no joke.

1989GTATransAm,
What size rubber (probably silicone) is the tube connected to your TB? I have a stock speed density camaro tube which is very unsmooth I always wondered how much turbulence it is causing. It would be kind of cool to replace it with a smooth tube.

The hose is 4 inch in diameter between the throttle body and the LT1 elbow. Allen

Relocating the IAT/MAT sensor on a MAF car does absolutely nothing - it is a useless modification. The IAT/MAT sensor is only for the EGR on a MAF car. All incoming air (density, temp, humidity) is determined by the MAF sensor alone.

The only car that can benefit from a relocated IAT/MAT sensor is the SD cars....and then they MUST have the MAT Tables recalibrated in the eprom or they won't calculate the fuel properly.

Hey Nice Job, im looking to try and do something similar, but i dont want to have to switch the battery with the charcoal canister. I wanted to ask if anyone knows or has a maf tpi with cai and the battery is on the passenger side and the filter runs down to the drivers side and the canister is just moved out of the way enough for the filter to be installed? Ive been told yes and the elbow just needs to be turned the other way, but it looks like the upper radiator hose might be in the way of installation. Can anyone elaborate on this?

If my car was here I would go and take a look to see if it would clear the upper radiator hose. However it is in the local garage getting the A/C fixed along with the change out to Mobil 1 in the engine and rear end. Things are starting to warm up here in SoCal. Hehehe.

Like I said above Vincent did that on his Camaro but as you know the hood on the Camaro does not slope like on the Trans Am. Allen
