Gear Drives & TPI

Okay, so will a gear drive rated as not noisy still interfere with the knock sensor? And if not... does it still give a semi nice blower-like noise?

Thanks!

A desensitized sensor shouldn't have a problem.
The noise comes from friction and that costs you power, so it's not I wise trade off as far as performance goes.

weve had a pete jackson gear drive on our 78 TA for years, the motor has seen the dyno many times with both the gear drive and a chain, never once saw any difference.

On a carbed setup .... it left 10 hp on the table.... when converted to a chain she gained it back .

One an EFI setup ....to noisey you willl have knock retard .

Got any proof of abnormal knock retard? I've never had any. Only one person I know of on these boards that actually used a gear drive did.

Nah , no proof sir , just got the info off of this board somewhere . SO I never wanted to run one . But my mechanic DID see the loss that a gear drive put on a( carb'd) motor . That was also enough for me not to want one.

You run one on a fuelie car ? You see NO knock with it ? Did you convert to that less sensitive LT4 knock sensor ?<--- somethnig else I got off this board as a remidy

Nope, just installed it and ran it. No mods. No false knock issues. So have numerous other people here, who have not had problems. Basically its the hearsay that keeps popping up that you cant use it, but there is never any proof. There is at least one person getting away with a PJ 'Noisy' drive.

Even if the KS did get triggered, it is easily "tweaked out" by tuning the eprom. FYI, many guys don't even run a KS on big inch SBCs because the harmonics are wrong and thus the KS gets fooled anyway.

Also, on MANY stock or mild TPI setups, the KS tends to "over correct" in WOT, and the best way to get performance is to "disable" the KS in WOT and then properly tune the spark curve. Then you just run the KS for "part throttle" in case you get a tank of a bad gas or you drive up a long hill on a really hot day (the most likely time you are to encounter ping when in part throttle).

So, if you want a gear-drive, get it and don't worry about the KS. It's an easy fix even if it did turn out to be triggered.

Never thought about modifying the PROM in regards to the KS. Thats a great idea! I think I'm gonna go with this gear drive after all (bought it when I planned to go carb, now decided to stick with EFI).

OK - I think I will go with a "noisy" one then. Does anyone have an opinion of PJ vs Proform?

Why run a gear drive? Why add the bad harmonics in the motor, knock sensor or otherwise? Pro-stockers ran a gear drive w/ a plastic toothed cam gear for years, trying to eliminate the bad harmonics caused by the gear-drive. - Now I realize we're not talking pro-stock, but...why?
