third gen newb...explain all these motor codes l98,l69...etc

as the tite states... what do all these mean? i thought i almost had it figuered out, but i guess i didn't. could you please clear all these engine codes up for me?

also: i have a 91 trans am ws6 with the 350 tpi, and was wondering the engine code for that.

and also, what the stock hp rating was for my car.

thanks a ot guys, i really appreciate it. and if any of you guys know, what should i expect to see as far as times at the track with my car? all i have done is a k&n drop in, and a flowmaster cat-back system. i know it should be in like the 17's or 18's but im not exactly sure (i live at approx 5280ft elev).

thanks again guys, mike

Peruse the Technical Data.

You have an L98 that makes 245HP, 345ft-lbs. torque.

That is more of a question for the Organized Drag Racing and Autocross forum.

The NHRA correction factors for ET and MPH are .9341 and 1.0703 at 5300ft. above sea level.

A really good timeslip for a basically stock speed-density L98 in a 'Bird would be about 14.4@94mph. Corrected that would be about a 15.4@88mph. Being less optimistic, I would add at least 3 to 4 tenths for your estimate.

if it runs 17s or 18s at any elevation, something is wrong with the car and it needs some general maintenance. L98s aren't that slow, they just get grouped in with the L03s and LG4s and it hurts their reputation with respect to performance. MY L98 only has headers, highflow cat and 3" exhaust and i ran a 14.04 my first time at the 1/4 mile with it with a lousy 2.18 60' time. Be a little optimistic!

The speed density L98's usually run 14.4's stock. So you should be in the 14's for sure unless your car is in need of tune or if you cant drive very well lol. Why the hell would you hope for 17.5-18.0? I think thats what those 2.8L cars run

He's at an altitude of about 5280ft. The air gets thinner. The times get slower.

as far shifting, should i leave it in D, or go 1-2-D?

obviosly the valvebody isn't manual, so should i even bother shifting?

Heck even with the alt. you should run in the low 15,s . Mine has over 200k on it and it still runs 14.6s at the local tracks in the Atlanata area. Just put it in drive and feather it off the line unless you have some stickys....LOL. Good luck.

You got that right. I live in albuquerque with an elevation of 5500ft . My L98 did 15.9@88mph bone stock. Ive felt I coulda got a 10th or so out of it but not much more. Dont be surprised when you run a 15. BTW cars that run here then go to phoenix pick up a second easily so the correction factor stated above is pretty damn accurate.

Sometime the amount of miles do not matter if the car is in tune, and was babied its whole life. Could run anywhere from 14.5-15.0.

Some cars run fast with more miles. Rings are worn in, less friction.
