not sure about the code 42 (Electronic Spark Timing (EST)) are all your wires connected? and i think that misfiring causes headers to glow red. sorry i couldn't be more of a help

it will idle pretty well over 1500 to 3000 but thats when the headers start to glow, i have a dual exhaust on the car with 2 cats could both get clogged like that?!? it even gives my trouble starting still, could all this be related to code 42?

with code 42 showing you are most likely not getting any advance above the base.

Re: code 42 and my headers glow red within 2 min of start-up
did a little observation of the car while idling and the headers dont turn red while its idleing. I had the car running for 5 min no red glow, all the other times i was on the gas. i was told by some people i know that headers glowing is a sign of running lean. also when im in drive and i give it gas it doesnt want to go, like it has no ***** what so ever. none of this happened before code 42 showed up. my repair manual says for code 42: poor electrical connction, open or short in circuit; defective ignition module; defective ecm. i have gone over all the electrical connections and their alll tight. im not totally sure how to check for an open or short in circuit. i do want to check my ignition module but according to the repair manual i have to take my distributor out ??wtf? and i kno my ecm is working properly cuz i unplug other sensors and it picks it up. i do want to check my igniton module but do i really have to take the distributor out of the car or can i just take the cap off to get at it?

Is your E.S.T. where mine used to be located. I used to have a 165 ECM with MAF and my EST was located directly behind the power booster on the wirewall. It is a box about 3 inches by 3 inches in Diameter. If you are running a 730 S/D ecm which is evident by a Map Sensor, your E.S.T. would be in your Distrib Cap and controlled through your ECM.

Re: code 42 and my headers glow red within 2 min of start-up
mae sure they test it a few times until its nice and hot that way you know its being tested under running conditions. i have heard of some people that have tested them and on the 3rd try it tested bad, never know i guess. for me it was my ecm. if not the control module also test the pick-up coil and make sure its not shorting to ground. if it is i would replace that, about 20 bucks at parts store.
