I need your opinion on the intake and heads being ported

Next week I am going to have new injectors and an AFPR put in. It's a 305 TPI. At the same time, I am having the shop port my plenum.

They asked me if I wanted my heads ported too. I was wondering if porting my heads would be worth it. I don't think that it would cost tooo much more to have the heads ported, but I don't know for sure.

Should I also have the base and the runners ported?

My income level really sucks too because I am in college. It's only a 305 and I am not looking for a super fast engine right now. I just want something with a little more zip than what I have right now.

Basically I am wondering if porting the base and the heads would be worth the money.

I would do the work myself, but I have absolutely NO access to tools, which is really getting on my nerves.

Thanks,
Jesse

Sounds like you are on a limited budget. Its gonna cost a bunch more for them to go to the extent of pulling the intake and heads to port them. How much they getting you for on the plenum and injector swap?
It would probably be cheaper to look into some 1.6 ratio rocker arms, just the stamped steel ones, to pick up a few more hp.

madmax, I should be getting a rough estimate sometime soon. I gave them the list of everything to be done. I already have all of the parts, all they have to do is put them on. I would do it all myself, but I can't get to any tools.

Who makes stamped steel rocker arms, the only ones that I have seen are the crane cames gold ones.

Thanks,
Jesse

I put a 305 setup on a 350. The only thing I did was hand port the plenum. These engines live on torgue, which means air velocity. The passages are fine for a 305.
I would DEFINITELY get the injectors cleaned, and matched. This is critical to fuel flow. It will cost $100, but the best thing you can do.

I forgot one last thing. Modify the air box, yourself, and maybe get an airfoil for $60.

Crane makes stamped 1.6 rockers. PN 11802-16
Summit has them for $80, may be able to find it cheaper.

Thanks for the part number Madmax.

One more quetion, are you saying to have the heads ported and add the 1.6 rockers, or just stick on the 1.6 rockers and not port the heads.

From what I have gathered from both boards, it sounds like I don't need to have the base ported.

Oh, I already have an airfoil, I picked one up from SLP back when they were $40 last year.

Thanks,
Jesse

I think when you find out how much they will want to port the heads, youll change your mind...

Id put the 1.6's on without doing the heads.

If I want to get rid of the blue smoke at start up, that means that it has something to do with the valve seals right? So if I have the heads ported, then I will have to get new seals. I could also get the 1.6 rockers.

From what I saw that they ported on another guys heads, they just did the area behind the valves.

Thanks,
Jesse

Dont have to remove the heads to replace the valve seals. You do have to move the rockers though, so it would be a good time to change them. New springs arent a bad idea either, stock ones IMO suck.
In all seriousness, ask them how much and then decide. Taking heads off is alot more work than pulling the upper intake, and they do charge accordingly.

wow, both message boards (here and camaroz28.com) say to leave the heads on and changing the springs and rocker arms would be better.

So I won't talk to them about porting the heads anymore. I will just get new valve seals, stronger springs, and the stamped 1.6 roller rockers from crane.

Thanks,
Jesse
