what is faster in our third gens?
is a 350 stock carbed motor faster than our tpi motor stock
just asking ive been thinking about going to carb for a while
I really just want to put a whole differant motor in but just wondering what my car would run in the 1/4 mile with a mildly built 350 or 327

tpi limits hp above say 4500 on a 350. figure out some combos and then ask the question again. as stated way to many variables.

Re: what is faster in our third gens?
ok maybe this is better ok
take a stock 350 tpi motor with older style heads my bolts dont go thrue the middle of the valve covers
take a stock 350 carb motor that red lines at 5500
and which one of these motors would make my 1986 z28 the fastest

Re: what is faster in our third gens?
What are the specs on the "older style heads"? Just because they are a different bolt pattern doesn't mean they are better than the factory heads.
I think what Street Lethal is saying is true... there are alot of specs that determine how "fast" a car will be. So, saying a "stock 350 carb motor" is pretty generic. For example, a 350 carb motor that came stock in a 1969 Camaro may be 350HP, whereas a 350 carb motor that came stock from a 1977 Camaro may be 250HP. As you can see from this example, both motors are "stock 350 carb" but they are quite different.
No one is trying to be difficult or hassle you... its just a tough question to answer without all the necessary specs.
Hope this helps.

Re: what is faster in our third gens?
I'm sure its debatable, but my 2 cents is the TPI motor would be faster off the line and probably in the 1/4. However when you get into higher-rpm's, as rjt76 mentioned, the carb would be faster due to the air limitations of the factory TPI. It really just depends on where you want the powerband.

FYI - I'm assuming we are using the same car when comparing motors (that way we have the same vehicle weight, trans, rear gears, etc).
Hope this helps.

Re: what is faster in our third gens?
I think with the same bottom end, heads, cam, and iginition, with a Qjet carb/stock GM intake vs. TPI (thats as stock for stock as you can get), the carbed motor should make more power, especially on the topend. The TPI may make better lowend, but by 3000rpm the carbed motor would be pulling strongly, and pull well beyond TPI's topend limits. But, TPI can be made to run well, has great throttle response (compared to a stock Qjet) and is much better for a daily driver.

Re: what is faster in our third gens?
In case you didn't know, there wasn't a stock 350 carbed thirdgen camaro/firebird.
But, if it's a daily driver, and not too modified, and already has a good working TPI, I'd spend the money on the TPI.
If it's mostly a toy that you don't care that you have to pump the throttle to start, hold it open to idle cold, or run with a choke, and have bad mileage, and want to spend money on an intake, carb & air filter, distributor, pump or regulator, lines, etc.. but want a better E.T. then a good* carb setup is usually faster with less skills.

Re: what is faster in our third gens?
Honestly its a matter of who you ask. Ask a carb guy, and he'll tell you a carb is faster. Ask a TPI guy, and he'll tell you the TPI is better. In reality, a carb is better for a race car, and a fuel injection setup like TPI is better for a daily driver.
