Speedometer quit working.

Went out to get in the car (1991 Z-28, 305, auto tranny) one morning and when I started driving I noticed that the Speedo had quit working. The dummy light never came on and the odometer is still working. And the speedo was working fine the last time I had driven it. Any idea if this would be a defective VSS? Not sure what it would be. Guess I will take it to the shop if I can't figure out what it is with some help from here.

I will check the drive gear, and from what I have gathered my car has an electronic speedo and doesn't have a cable.

Yes your car should have an electric speedo. It doesn't sound like your VSS is bad since it isn't throwin a code up, so the ECM is still getting a signal. I think your gauge is bad, but I don't know how you would go about fixing it without having to replace the whole cluster, I'm not real familier with the 90-92 gauge clusters.

I do think it is strange that your odo is still working though, maybe the needle is just stuck or became detached from the face of the gauge.

Re: Speedometer quit working.

Talked to my mechanic today and he also agrees that it is most likely the actual speedometer unit. I am going to take it in and have it checked out here in the next couple of days to find out for sure. Does anyone know if it can be replaced by it's self or do you have to replace the entire cluster also?

Cant rack up miles if the speedo isnt working! The two go hand in hand.

Not saying it will work for you but, I once had the similar problem with my RS, only it would come and go. The culprit, the connection at the cluster. Make sure the male wiring connector is fully seated into the female connector on the back of the cluster. It's a free check.

Good luck

How difficult is it to pull the cluster out?

Re: Speedometer quit working.

i have the same problem with my 91 z28 convertible ..

i took it to the chevy dealer and they wanted $610 to send the cluster away and get it fixed ..

it happens to all of them eventually ... something to do with the resistors and crap on the board ..

but i found that nordskog makes a "direct fit" replacement digital panel .. ordered mine 3 months ago for $462 w/ shipping .. and there just now gettin ready to ship

from what i understand .. our gauge clusters are only 91-92 .. so there is no real big demand ..so they only make a few clusters a year .. but they got a lifetime warranty which won me over ..

if you want to get one i'd call them right now b/c they emailed me saying there almost done building them for this year .. next chance will be mid december this year ..

ill let yall know how it goes when i install it in about a week or so ..

Re: Speedometer quit working.

got my camaro built and all back together ..

its my daily driver now .. fun as hell to drive .. also got the digital cluster hooked up ..

i must say its a REALLY nice upgrade from the stock cluster .. especially for $462

and its very accurate .. i love it and all my friends think its the best thing ever ..

if you have troubles with you guages, i'd recomend getting one ..

only thing is the wait for it, they only make the 91/92 cluster one time a year .. but i think all the other third gen ones are readily available ..

and they got a lifetime warranty
